This movie is based on Angie Thomas’ best-selling novel and deals with what young African Americans face on a day-to-day basis, when coming in contact with the police, racial injustice and at sometimes feeling their life is not valued as a humans. There were parts of this move that had me crying. The actors and actresses did an awesome job. The young girl who played Starr Carter did a fantastic job even the young child who played her baby brother made a huge thought provoking impact at the end of the movie. This is a MUST buy!

    Cops dealing with racial bias

This is a great movie about race relations and biases between police and African Americans. We see clearly the fear that Blacks have to live with in their everyday dealings with police. And we see how police can end up in a negative light for doing their jobs and doing what they're trained to do. So, while the movie might stress Black fear of belligerent police, we get both sides of the story. The resolution to both sides thinking they're doing the right things is what this movie asks viewers to think about.

The Hate U Give is an emotionally gripping and powerful crime drama based on the novel of the same name by Angie Thomas. Featuring an intensely moving and spellbinding performance by the talented Amandla Stenberg, the plot directly tackles a troubling issue faced by many people, as experienced through the eyes of a young teen. Although it's not a significant upgrade over its Blu-ray counterpart, the poignant film debuts on Ultra HD with a good-looking 4K HDR10 presentation and a largely satisfying DTS-HD MA soundtrack. With a somewhat disappointing yet informative set of bonus features, the overall package is nonetheless recommended and sure to make a great addition to the UHD library.

    A Film with a Conscience

This film is a modern day version of hood life, like a remix of Boys in Da Hood. The only difference is that it reflects the struggle between police and the Black community as well as issues Blacks face when caught between 2 worlds and feeling as if neither is ideal. All the cast were phenomenal, especially Amandla. This is one for Black History Month.

I red the reviews on this movie and I was extremely disappointed about the negativity so many people had to off. It was mostly people being upset about stereotypes. It’s heartbreaking because until you are in a black person’s shoes, how can you scream stereotype when they can’t possibly know. I made my husband and son watch this movie with me and it aloud me and my husband to prepare our son for what may or may not happen.

This is a very good film. I went to see it at the movie theater, and it was so important that I preordered it on Blu Ray as well. The acting was superb. It should have been nominated for numerous awards and received more recognition than it did. It’s a shame that great acting and movies continue to get overlooked by award shows.

While there are some views this movie presents that some might debate they do not confuse the message. It addresses the issue of relationships and the disparity and injustice of our society with regards to minorities. There is a powerful statement about parents and their impact on young lives. This is a must see...if you care.

This movie was released at an important time in what our history will be - and they portrayed it gracefully. There are two sides to everything and this movie really brought to light that not all situations can be "cut and dry" but that there is a moral code going unfollowed. This is a sensitive topic to take such a risk with & they did it well! Its enlightening to say the least.

Purchased this movie for my daughter to watch of how still today these topics are going on in our communities everywhere and to see it from a teenager’s perspective. Movie really made an important message to how to act/respond to law enforcement, knowing and understanding your rights, and letting your light shine to bring change in the community and world.

The Hate You Give is an exemplary exhibition of racial profiling, dehumanization and murder. Yet, the people in the community band together to be a voice their dissatisfaction all the while enriching their lives with love, lessons and living. A must see for anyone with a functioning moral compass and those who truly seek to understand the continuous struggle of POC.

Really good movie. Definitely would recommend. Spot on representation of some of problems with the justice system along with ignorance pertaining to our actions. Both sides are represented in the good and the bad. Just watch the movie it’s really good. A little messed up but it’s the ugly truth of what happens in the world.

Topical, touching, and optimistic social drama

An excellent 4K presentation of a very current social drama. I chose not to read the book, but after finishing the movie, I am reconsidering it. I was very moved by the film, which speaks on all the big issues of the Black Lives Matter movement and police brutality, and on a subtler level, the difficulty experienced by people who live in two different worlds. Young actress Amandla Stenberg carries the film in the lead role of Starr Carter, who goes to a mostly White school and adopts another persona than when she’s in her Black community. The film reminds me in part of dramas of the ‘90s like Boyz N the Hood or Juice, but has a more feminine perspective and acknowledges the 25 (or more) years in which the system has failed to improve in delivering justice to communities of color. When Starr reconnects with her friend Khalil after a party, he tells her about the message he learned from Tupac Shakur’s T.H.U.G. L.I.F.E. philosophy, which sounded brutal to a lot of audiences who misunderstood, but the beginning of the acronym serves here as the title of the film, The Hate U Give—and how that hate plants itself in young people to make them destructive, especially self-destructive. A tragedy sends repercussions through both of Starr’s worlds, and as her testimony in a criminal cases brings threats to her doorstep, she also finds that not all of her White friends are as concerned about justice as she is. The same ideological divides that saw a peak clash in 2020—with Black Lives Matter challenged by Blue Lives Matter—plays out on the screen in this film, and while it doesn’t try to portray an equality to both arguments, it certainly makes it clear why the film and its characters take the stand that it chooses. What might have seemed far more challenging to White audiences in 2018 should be more understandable to those who have seen the outrage over George Floyd’s and Breona Taylor’s murders escalate, and I invite anyone who wants to learn more about the frustration behind the Black Lives Matter movement to watch the film and hopefully see things in a new way. As a film, it’s extremely well made, based on the novel by Angie Thomas and directed by George Tillman, Jr., (Notorious, Men of Honor) and with veteran performers like Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Anthony Mackie, and Common. It’s one of the most moving films I’ve seen in the past year, as well as one of the most insightful; the importance of these issues just two years after it was made shouldn’t be ignored.

This movie is riveting! I wasn’t a fan of the title, so I never bought the movie, even though I was very curious about the title. I saw it on an overseas trip and was glued to the screen! It was just a fantastic movie on all levels! A MUST buy!!!

We had wanted to see this movie in the theater but we never made it so when we could rent it on demand, we did and were definitely not disappointed. This movie is very relevant for what is happening in the world today and makes you see both sides of the picture.
