So awesome! I was on the edge of my seat the entire movie. Did not disappoint. And it ended exactly where the Lord of the Rings Trilogy started, so there was no guessing, wondering nor confusion because of a lapse. Don't understand why this didn't get nominated for best cinematography. Wish my nearest theater would have offered it in 3D - would have been magnificent. I am 65. Saw it with my 28 year old granddaughter and 8 year old grandson. We all enjoyed it equally.

Peter Jackson now has six J.R.R. Tolkien flims as part of his filmogrpahy. I can honestly say I was dreading going back to Middle Earth yet again and do the whole HOBBIT thing (one book, three movies) but then at each release there I was watching them again. This one is spectacular in every sense of the word. The 3D is amazing. And the pace is perfect. Whenever a film gets close to the 3 hour mark you will either feel you painfully have been sitting there (a bad movie) or time flew by (a great movie). This is a great one. Ending The Hobbit tale on a grand scale.

Ok, you are a fan of the franchise or you are not. Since you are reading this I assume you are or you are looking for a gift for somebody who is. The film itself is great and the 3D really pulls you in.
Many 3D movies are shot in the traditional way with 3D effects added in post production, this film was shot in 3D and it shows (if you want to know more about this watch the extra features!). The effects are immersive and add greatly to the viewing experience.
The extras are also fantastic, if you are a fan (or are buying for one) you can't go wrong here.

A Little Disappointed...

As the last in "The Hobbit" trilogy, I had high hopes and expectations of greatness associated with "Return of the King". It seams the issues with each of those movies is exactly the opposite of the other. Director Peter Jackson was criticized for having too many "false" endings in "Return of the King". Jackson made a complete 180 and hardly had any ending at all, leaving many plot lines unresolved. Not that this ruins the movie, but it does catch the viewer off guard when the battle ends and the credits roll. I hope that Jackson is hoping to resolve these holes in the extended edition, but we will have to wait and see.
This is a well made film with lots of action. If you are looking for epic battle scenes, you won't be disappointed! But if you are looking for more substance in a film, look elsewhere, at least until the extended edition comes out...

Extended Edition - Extended Fun

I enjoy all the Peter Jackson movies of Tolkien's books, some more than others, but I think they are all very entertaining. The extended versions of the first two Hobbit movies didn't add too much, but the extended of The Battle of the Five Armies adds quite a bit. Mostly in the second half during the Battle. I liked seeing the funeral of Thorin. I wondered why it got an R rating and I guess it is because of all the beheadings in the extra battle scenes. It all happens so fast to the CGI creatures that I don't see the need for an R rating.

...And not the book. If you were a Hobbit-book-only fan, you might have been OK with the first Hobbit movie, but then got turned off in movie two by the barrel-riding dwarf/elf/orc battle. I doubt you made it to the instant-on, gold-melting furnace scene where the dwarves take on the wondrous Smaug
But if you enjoy the Hobbit series as simply book-inspired, over-the-top fun, then you likely enjoyed most of movie three. Billy Connoly does a great turn as Dain, too. But I gotta say that the giant tunneling worms was a bit too campy -- shades of "Dune"

The "franchise" behind this movie continues to deliver first rate entertainment. This, the final episode of the movie trilogy made from The Hobbit, does not disappoint. Third acts can be tough, but this one exceeds expectations - the story line, the acting, the grandeur of production continue to be exceptional. Interestingly, the finale provided an excellent segue into the real trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. Oh, wait, that's already been done as a trio of movies by these folks; so what the heck, cross that bridge, and watch the LOR trilogy again!

SPECTACULAR ENDING TO "THE HOBBIT" FILM TRILOGY

"The Battle of the Five Armies" is very entertaining and a wonderful ending to "The Hobbit" trilogy. I have thoroughly enjoyed all three "Hobbit" films and got to see all three back to back in 3-D in the IMAX theatre at Regal Opry Mills Cinemas. That was quite a special 12 hour spectacle - lots of people dressed up as Gandalf, Legolas and Hobbits. I will never forget that movie-going experience. I am very sad to see the end come to "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" film trilogies - those films have been such a joyful part of my life.

This is a very fitting end of the journey to Middle Earth. The Hobbit was enlarged to 3 epic films on the scale of the Ring Trilogy by including pre-prequel events from the appendices to the printed Ring (and the Silmarillion according to one item I read). The production standards are of the highest order. The photography, the sound quality, the script (of course, they had an excellent source), the special effects, and even the acting, are all on a very high order. Tolkien and the audience are both served extremely well. Highly recommended!

Excellent acting, excellent cinematics, and excellent animation...though I wish they would have made some of the lead characters, such as Azog, real actors in costume. CGI characters don't normally reflect a good level of emotion or intensity, with the exception of Smaug. Anyway, the battle scene is pretty good and emulates a real battle somewhat. Some armies aren't as coordinated as others and don't anticipate tactics. Thankfully, there's no ghost army that sweeps in and kills everyone with a fog of green. :)

filmed mostly in New Zealand, this movie finishes the story of Bilbo Baggins and the company of dwarves..that travel through many adventures to make it to the Lonely Mountain, to reclaim the treasure that lies within . visually the film is quite stunning , and the epic landscape of beautiful New Zealand is really something to see (( Peter Jackson)) the director really hit on something good here.. he was able to take a classic book, and make it into three remarkable movies..I highly recommend for anybody that loves an adventure !!

Extended editions rock!

Peter Jackson's extended editions for both the LotR and Hobbit series always add a great amount of detail to his films, and often entire new scenes that add to the overall narrative. The new scenes added to this film are excellent, and they turn this into an even better movie. The extras are, as always, fascinating looks behind the scenes, with the added bonus of being a farewell from everyone involved in the films to the fans. This is a great way to wind up the Peter Jackson / JRR Tolkien journey after 16+ years.

Respect for Jackson's vision

I understand the criticisms of these movies and do think that maybe 2 movies instead of 3 would have been better, but at least it was Peter Jackson who got to take us back to Middle Earth and was able to give us his vision in cinematic form. Are there issues with these movies (and more specifically this final outing?) - yes, of course. But I still enjoyed it immensely and the changes and additional content didn't bother me. Personally, I'm happy just seeing anything to do with Middle Earth and being immersed in that world.

Surprisingly so I enjoyed "The Battle of The Five Mountain." I must say after seeing the first of this overly long Trilogy and them purchasing the second of the three, it has only been now that I have seen the third. In Peter Jackson's endeavor to turn "The Hobbit" into an overly long 9-hour Trilogy, so much extraneous blather had been added that I was so very much disappointed. There was also so very, very many parts including those ridiculous amusement park ride chase scenes that were as I said, ridiculous.
I understand that such silly stuff was added for those who have never read the books and those who never will, at the expense of the stories.
The good thing is that the books won't be affected by the films.

A somewhat satisfying conclusion to the trilogy

It's impossible not to compare this trilogy to LOTR, which ultimately makes the Hobbit experience a disappointment. However, I was mildly satisfied with this conclusion. I wish that the ending had tied up the story of the dwarves a bit better, including the future of Erebor, but, ultimately, The Battle of Five Armies is action packed and entertaining. My main gripe has to do with the development (or lack thereof) of the characters, but that criticism can be said for all three films. All in all, being a fan of Middle Earth and LOTR I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It certainly is not without its faults, but it's enjoyable.

This product changed my life forever! I used be be like everyone else who had no idea how The Hobbit and LOTR trilogy fit together, well now I know! I'm no longer out of the loop and am now a Cool Kid! Watching this movie encouraged me to go on an adventure. So I got off my couch and walked to the fridge and said to myself, "that's enough adventure for one day!" I then returned to my couch and watched Netflix. Maybe tomorrow I will venture outside of my house...who knows. Maybe. But most likely I will not.

The movie picks up just before when the last left off. Of course you have to see the others to appreciate the end. A lot of action and story all rolled up in the final episode of the Hobbit stories. Nicely fits itself between the 2nd Hobbit and 1st Lord of the Rings stories. I think it was well done. It is beautiful and you can see the growth of the director and his teams in techniques; it would be greatly felt if you were to do a marathon back to back and indeed went from the last Hobbit to the first LOTR movies. Those that felt so ground breaking and amazing when they first came out feel a little rough now in comparison. They are all great and should be appreciated for the stories they tell and the worlds they create as were the books they are based on.

The 3D Blu-ray was in perfect shape. The playback was without any errors of drop outs. I wish that the industry would realize that more people would be interested in 3D if the price wasn't so high. If you want the media to be a success, more people will need to embrace it.
The movie itself was fun. It was similar to the previous ones in that there is a pretty violent battle, but that should be expected. The graphics were great and the CG was good. The 3D affects were good without being overdone.
