Peter Jackson is THE director for big-screen epics

While the first "Hobbit" film in this latest trilogy from director Peter Jackson took its sweet time getting things moving, this one does away with the singing and kitchen antics that slowed down "An Unexpected Journey" and follows the adventures of Bilbo, Gandalf, and company on their way to an exciting encounter with the dragon Smaug. The action sequences are spectacular and visually innovative, so much better than the latest works from Michael Bay, George Lucas, etc...especially an attack by giant spiders in a forest and a great chase in wine barrels along a raging river. Nice to see Evangeline Lilly of LOST playing an elf warrior, along with returning favorite Legolas (Orlando Bloom) who really steals the scenes he's in dispatching Orcs and other villains with Matrix-like flair (only not in slo-mo "bullet time!"). Smaug is awesomely rendered, animated, and voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch. Really looking forward to the next movie, which should conclude this trilogy with great spectacle just as "Return of the Kind" did with the earlier LOTR trilogy. Bravo, Peter Jackson! Movies like this are what Blu-ray was made for. Enjoy in your home theater...

Just like with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Hobbit movies are released on DVD/BluRay as the theatrical versions and then months later released again with extended versions. Result is that the fans of these wonderful movies are faced with buying the original releases and then having to repurchase them again in order to have the extended versions. It would be wonderful if the movie industry would release both versions with the initial release and let the fans decide which version they preferred so as to only have to buy them once. Regardless, I am thrilled to have the extended version and I have found that with each extended version, there are wonderful additions to the films that merit the cost and time of watching a longer version of these movies. Clever marketing without a doubt. I am now looking forward to the last of this trilogy although i know it will be released as the others with the original theatrical and then at a later date the extended version. Oh well, what are we going to do except buy them both because no Hobbit or LOR fan is going to wait. Strongly recommend these movies!

I loved the LOTR series and the extended editions so much more. The theatrical versions of the Hobbit films left me scratching my head more with each release. While they had some good to great moments in them and are visually stunning, overall they seemed more of an inconsistent mess of story. My mind changed when i revisited them on Blu in their extended versions. While the films still have some storytelling and pacing issues, the edits and added scenes allow the films to breathe unlike their theatrical versions. Bilbo becomes more of a central figure in the story and we have more quiet moments to balance out the action. They feel better paced overall and a great addition to the LOTR trilogy. I think in time people will look to the 6 films in Jackson's filmography as quite a cinematic achievement in its breadth and scope. One last thing, the actually Battle of the Five armies is an amazing smorgasbord of choreography, storytelling and visual gory fun. You can tell that Peter Jackson and the crew had a lot of fun putting it together.

Since the 1st installment of The Hobbit needed to set the context for the planned sequels, it moved at a deliberate pace. It enwhroduced us to the major characters, introduced the overall story line, etc. That is not to say it was dull; it was not. It had a good plot, quite a bit of humor, and, like the LotR trilogy, gorgeous photography. All of these are present in the 2nd installment of The Hobbit. But now, the action picks up, with Orc battles and chases galore, elves finally showing us why they got a reputation in the first 2 ages of middle earth, and a dragon that is truly what we expect a dragon to be: enormous, fearsome, with a fire that can fuse sand into glass, a step that quakes the earth, and a voice deep enough to vibrate the air below the threshold of hearing. The cinematography is again spectacular, and the special effects are breathtaking. The enormous dwarf halls and carvings are very realistic. All in all, I cannot find fault with anything. Even the parts that are not in Tolkien's Hobbit fit in without visible seams. JRRT would have approved.

    The Hobbit Just Gets Better

The Hobbit trilogy is underway, and we now have the first two films on DVD / Blu ray. So far, the series is great...very much in the tradition of The Lord Of The Rings films. Although the first Hobbit film, "An Unexpected Journey" is a very entertaining film, it lacks the heavy action we are used to from Peter Jackson. It was more of a character establishing story. "The Desolation Of Smaug" really ramps up the action and peril, and we learn more about the characters so now we care much more about them. And we get a good, close look at what our heroes are facing and the showdown is coming in December 2014 with the third and final film in the series "There And Back Again". (By the way, if spiders make you squeamish, you may want to get a sandwich during about 10-15 minutes of the movie.) I purchased the 3D version of this movie, and with the Samsung 3D TV (which I also purchased from Best Buy) the 3D is exactly as I saw it in the theater. An amazing soundtrack and score, "The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug" will be a welcomed addition to your film library.
