Incredible Ridley Scott historical action drama movie! I thought this movie was fantastic and in my eyes the best Ridley Scott period film since Gladiator. It takes place during the Medieval period before the Crusades and all of the locations, settings, costumes, and characters felt very authentic with a great attention to detail of how the nobleman, knights, women and other people who were portrayed would have behaved during that time period. The movie itself is based on a book and is a true story so if you are a history buff like I am there is also a lot to enjoy with seeing the scenes enacted in the locations where they were filmed and especially the battle scenes. The film was long and does drag a bit in some parts but every scene does have a purpose and meaning to the overall plot and it all builds to a very epic and satisfying conclusion that needs to be seen to experience. I bought the film in 4K and it looks terrific on my tv and I really enjoyed it for anyone looking for a good movie to play on their home entertainment system. I highly recommend it!

While The Last Duel may not be the greatest period epic Ridley Scott ever made, it is a heck of an experience easily one of his best films in recent years. I haven’t personally seen House of Gucci yet so I can’t testify to that one. With a great script by Nicole Holofcener with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck contributing, Scott finds an intricately detailed, and relevant historical story to tell for modern times with an amazing performance from Jodi Comer at the center of it all. Not an easy film, but then it’s not an easy subject to tackle. Disney/20th Century Studios delivers a genuinely excellent 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release with a fantastic HDR10 transfer and Atmos mix to match. My only real upset here is the lack of expansive bonus features. Regardless of that small pinch, this is a great film worth seeing on a great disc. Highly Recommended.

A well executed but standard period drama, lighter in action then the opening or ending would indicate. The drama parts could drag on a bit, but they were well executed. The characters were believable and there were clear but not overly extreme differences when they told the story from different points of view. I liked that for once, a he said/she said story didn’t have one side denying the main plot point even happened, but rather had subtle shifts in details that sort of put a different outlook on the event, or at least would in the 14th century. Action climax was as thrilling and heavy as anyone would expect of Ridley Scott, enough so to make up for the misleading premise that there might’ve been more. Film looked great, well as great as 1300’s France can look really. Maybe a bit too long but we’ll worthwhile.

Phenomenal History-Drama Movie! Based on actual events, the film unravels long-held assumptions about France's last sanctioned duel between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris, two friends turned bitter rivals. Carrouges is a respected knight known for his bravery and skill on the battlefield. Le Gris is a Norman squire whose intelligence and eloquence make him one of the most admired nobles in court. When Carrouges' wife, Marguerite, is viciously assaulted by Le Gris, a charge he denies, she refuses to stay silent, stepping forward to accuse her attacker, an act of bravery and defiance that puts her life in jeopardy. The ensuing trial by combat, a grueling duel to the death, places the fate of all three in God's hands.

    Scott's shifts in perspective

Ridley Scott may have built reputation on sci-fi thrillers like Alien or Blade Runner, yet he also delved into historical drama and adventure. The Last Duel is a gripping, if flawed, exploration of how an abuse paved the way for the last legally-sanctioned duel in France. The performances are strong (particularly from Jodie Comer), the cinematography is glorious, and the direction is stellar, as we experience and explore different versions of what happened through character perspectives. While it is not Scott's best and may not stand close to The Gladiator, it is an inpressive and interesting film in its very own right.

The film is divided into three separate segments, each segment given from the point of view of Jean de Carrouges, Jacques Le Gris, and Marguerite de Carrouges. Adam driver delivers a masterful performance, bringing the character of Les Gris to vivid reality. He seemed to have a genuine friendship with Jean, which faulters as time goes on. Several scenes are graphic and quite brutal, and many scenes display Le Gris lecherous activities leading up to the assault of Marguerite. There are many great performances, and the shift in opinions from each characters point of view are sometimes very small. Though they do give insight to the frame of mind of all.

This story was so good. This is a story of really 3 people Matt Damon as Jean, his wife Jodie Comer as his wife and Adam Driver as Jacques, his best friend. BTW, Ben Affleck is superb in this too. Their is an accusation that Jacques assaulted his friends wife and then the story is told from each point of view. Leaving us to wonder did he or didn't he. Ridley Scott, directed this wonderful story and I loved it. Each actor was terrific. All exceptional and i really do recommend this movie.

MOVIE FALLS SHORT BUT 4K DOES NOT DISAPPOINT

Ridley Scott actioner with some flaws. Scenes are very dark so 4K would be a must to see the details. Pacing goes from one extreme to the other, making the movie feel that it is a little longer than it probably is (even though it is 153 minutes). On the plus side probably one of the best designed films depicting the time period. Jousting events and battle scenes extremely realistic. Scott shows the viewer the reason for the duel in the eyes of the 3 affected characters, which only adds to the length and pacing problems in my opinion. The 4K experience will not disappoint.
