The Ring on Blu-ray is outstanding

Before the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and the ill-fated Lone Ranger (2013), director Gore Verbinski made one of the greatest horror films of the past 20 years. Verbinski's version of The Ring (2002) follows a very good original Japanese film from 1998 (dir. Hideo Nakata), and an outstanding novel by Koji Suzuki. But this English-language adaptation is, for me, the best of all (I've also seen the instant remake from Korea, 1999's The Ring Virus). Verbinski has created maybe the most beautifully terrifying horror film in years. And it is beautiful: dark, moody, and sensual, with outstanding lead performances from Naomi Watts and Martin Henderson. The horror creeps up on you slowly - gets under your skin - yet the film never loses its momentum. Almost as much as this film, I am a huge admirer of the short Rings (2005): unlike the old DVD release of The Ring, this Blu-ray includes Rings. The short film, basically a mini sequel (and vastly better than the dull official retread, 2005's The Ring Two) is almost as good as Verbinski's picture, yet with a very different visual style, more documentary-like, and with first-rate acting by its teenage cast. (Rings is an early film from director Jonathan Liebesman, who also made the acclaimed sci-fi actioner, Battle Los Angeles.) If you like The Ring, and/or Rings, you may never see or hear a better presentation than on this Blu-ray. Highly recommended.

Gore Bervinski's humble beginnings!

As a fan of Japanese horror movies I scoffed at the thought of an American version of "Ringu". Gore Verbinski did not seem like the guy to tackle such a story. At the time, he was known as the director of a cute kids movie named "Mouse hunt" and the god awful Brad Pitt/Julia Roberts train wreck named "The Mexican". Lo and behold, he pulled it off incredibly. The casting of Naomi Watts, hot of her performance in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive doesn't hurt either. The Cinematography is fantastic, the score, the story itself worked well. This one is a classic remake that worked.

I really liked this movie because of the lighting. The movie has a dark/hazy lighting that sets the tone for the whole movie. Also this movie doesn't have a lot of gore but that's okay, it's still scary. What little is shown one can use his or her own imagination. The movie does go into why things are happening so that the movie watcher can understand. Great acting by the cast. When I saw this a while back I knew this was a movie that can be watched over and over again. It definitely is a cult classic in my opinion and a very under rated movie as well.

It is great watching a good scare movie in bluray makes you jump a little higher, but why is vol, 2 &3 not one bluray just like the Grudge series only the first on is on bluray. why? It is the same with the original japanese series only certain ones are on bluray, my feeling is if you do 1 do them all.

The Ring is one of my favorite horror films. I remember being terrified of it when I was a kid but I couldn't stop watching it. The steelbook is really cool and has a simple design. Definitely recommend seeing this movie if you haven't.

I decided to revisit this movie and I really enjoyed it this time. I really do not know why the same film now I wasnt into a decade earlier. It's a creepy ghost story and the lack of gore was a cool touch considering today's horror requires a lot of graphic bloodletting.

This movie brings so many memories form my youth. Watching it with friends and having some good scares. Thanks for having it! It's the best on blu ray and the extras were as good as the movie.

I love this movie and the Blu-Ray transfer is excellent. It delivers a really sharp picture. The movie itself is one of the most tense, scary movies I have seen without ever becoming gory.

I was not to thrilled when this was announced to be remade. I watched not sure what I would get. The story was the same but they tweeked story points which I think helped me understand the original. I would suggest looking out for the original and judge for yourself. Keeping in mind the Japanese version was a couple years old. It did break new ground so it's not a new thing as it was when it came out.
