My review based on 20 hrs of gameplay.
Pros: Fun turn based (SMT style) combat, art style looks really nice, music is good, and setting is quite unique. I never thought I would be playing a JRPG about idols / music industry lol.
Cons: story is not compelling. Subtitle only game which I would not mind except in combat there’s no subtitles...
Overall: I would recommend it if you like SMT/Persona type of games and you are OK with a meh story, since the gameplay is still quite fun and unique. Otherwise your better off looking for another game. Or try Persona 4 Golden first.

I tried playing on Wii U, and I was disappointed at the inability to play the game on just the gamepad. It's a great game to play, but it's tough to just sit and watch.
On Switch, they resolved that, and they did an excellent job of making the game work in a portable way. The battle system is great, and the story is goofy, but fun enough to keep me engaged.
The game itself is very positive, at it's core revolving around a group of friends who believe in each other and defeat enemies by lifting each other up and promoting their inner strengths.

Great JRPG with Japanese Culture Elements

I really like this game, more than I thought I would going in. It's a very light-hearted turn-based JRPG with gameplay similar to the Persona games and a few Fire Emblem elements thrown in.
The story isn't particularly complex and fairly predictable, but it makes up for it with the side quests and fun characters. The music, like other SMT/Persona games, is very good. Music in the background is a mix of instrumental electronica and rock, while music performed by the characters is mostly J-Pop. A lot of anime and Japanese culture themes. These aren't things I have particularly been into before, but I still very much appreciated and enjoyed it.
The map layout is kind of bland and a bit of a chore sometimes, however the turn-based combat is very enjoyable and the strongest part of the gameplay. It is fun and satisfying to exploit enemies' weaknesses and kick off chains of session attacks, which is the overall goal in combat, and later includes adlib performances by the characters that boost damage and have various effects on the battle.
If you are coming from the Fire Emblem franchise you will find that most of the game is an entirely new IP, with mostly casual references to the Fire Emblem series beyond the Persona-like Mirages that empower the protagonists and enemies. SMT and Persona's influence is mostly observed in the gameplay elements. Connections to the FE franchise becomes more of a theme late in the game, but I won't spoil that.
If you are looking for a good JRPG and Persona-like game that is light-hearted I recommend giving it a try. It's a good game and I am glad that it was re-released for the Switch. Hopefully Altus will later bring some Persona and more SMT games to the Switch in the future.

Picture it. You take the last three iterations of the Persona series, sprinkling in a little bit of that Fire Emblem character goodness, add a dash of MegaTen, and you've got Tokyo Mirage Sessions. Not quite as good as the sum of its parts, but an excellent romp and one of the best JRPGs in years.
Gameplay has you working your way through labyrinthine dungeons, much like in the last few Persona games, with your team of magically inclined teenagers. Fights are turn-based and fluid, allowing you to get repeated advantages against enemy weaknesses, making for fun and flowing good times in battle. Atlus ingenuity plus Nintendo slickness.
Story is predictable but fun, pitting your cast of heroes, all of whom are actors or models or singers, etc, against evil demons that want to steal our artistic inspiration. Silly but very enjoyable.
Not quite the next Persona or Megami Tensei, but an excellent game in its own right that completely stands up solo. Very recommended.

If you like JRPGs and anime in general, you’ll definitely like this. The combat system is unique as music is a part of it. It’s basically about Japanese idol culture where you the protagonist are a singer for an idol group. Weird supernatural things happen and now you and your idol friends have to fight the forces of evil. All with powers given through music. It’s a typical turn based JRPG that works fairly well.

This is not a Persona game. It is probably as close as we're going to get for the Nintendo Switch, and that is okay. I haven't played that much of the game yet, but it is a very flashy JRPG game. The story and character interactions are much more akin to SMT proper more than Persona. Like if you played SMT4 on the 3ds think closer to that, but with the flashiness of Persona. There Fire Emblem part is more referential than substantive. Although it does account for the FE weapon type chart. This game is probably better if you treat it as it own little thing. If you are looking for a Persona game this may let you down. If you want a Persona-like game or just hungry for more JRPG's then you'll probably like this. I think it is cool and definitely benefits from being on the Switch.

The battle system, and music is great. The fire emblem cameos are a treat for fans. If you can deal with the idol stuff, then it’s a solid JRPG

This is a master-class RPG in every sense of the term. Great characters, fantastic music, unique and complex dungeons, and some of the best combat in any game I've ever played. After playing the Wii U version several years go, I was immensely excited to see this ported to the Switch, and having now tried this version for myself, it more than lives up to my expectations with its new content and optimized performance.
If you are even remotely considering this, do yourself a favor and buy it.

Definitely feels like a kind of Persona 4.5, with an extremely energetic and engrossing battle system, very likeable characters, and bright, colorful graphics. Looks better in handheld mode than on the TV, due to this really being a port of a Wii U game. Added content includes new costumes and a special side dungeon, as well as vastly improved load times and even more battle options. This is a fantastic hidden gem that should be in every JRPG fan's collection!

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is a gem in the Switch. The JRPG cult classic from the WiiU made its way to the Switch with all DLC included. This game combines the combat and dungeon crawling of Shin Megami Tensei titles with characters and the level up system of Fire Emblem. The story is fun and engaging, and the battles are challenging but not overwhelming. This is a must for any JRPG fan.

Solid turn-based RPG that pulls in a lot of elements from the Fire Emblem, Persona, and Shin Megami Tensei series. It combines dungeon crawling, with JRPG turn-based combat. The world is very bright, has colorful art direction, great music and animations, fully animated cutscenes, and has a story that will keep you entertained for a solid 40-60+ hours depending on how much of the world you want to explore! JRPG fans, can't go wrong!

I will never not recommend this game to anyone. It's by far my favorite Wii U game and I'm overjoyed that it got rereleased on the Switch giving it a second chance to those who didn't own Nintendo's previous console. Gameplay is fun and the story is wacky, what else do you need in a modern classic JRPG?

If you can look past the Japanese idol culture, this game is incredibly relentless in the progression of your characters. There's also a really amazing battle system as well that is also constantly giving you new things to do and chain off of. Even in hour 30, there was still new things for my characters to do in battle!

I’ve never played a game quite like this. Only just started, but seems like a cool mix between fire emblem and atlas games. Although I haven’t dove too deep into the story or combat system, it seems like it’ll be a lot of fun as a turn based style. I feel like fans of either or both series will enjoy it

This is a great game for JRPG fans. It may not be for everyone since it is very anime and idol focused. However, if you're a fan of Persona or other similar type games, you will not be disappointed. You will get many hours of enjoyment of this unique music focused JRPG.

Having never bought a Wii U, I missed out on playing Tokyo Mirage Sessions when it first came out, but upon finding out a port version was on the Switch, I had to check it out, and was not disappointed!
Here, you play as Itsuki Aoi as he helps his friends achieve their goals as members of Fortuna Entertainment. Several Fire Emblem characters appear as allies and enemies, and there are several additions to the game that weren't on the original version.
Overall, Tokyo Mirage Sessions is a criminally underrated RPG that deserves much more love and attention. If you've played any of the games developed by Atlus, such as Persona or Shin Megami Tensei, you'll certainly enjoy this!

So I found this game to be very fun with it's turn based combat style and I feel like it works well to give each character their own niche in the game. Saying that there is some abilities that might be interesting at first but you find them dramatically outclassed in comparison to other abilities making but each character themselves don't really step on each other toes. The story itself is fairly interesting with the side stories being heavily pushed since they do give useful abilities and show more info about the character. This might be useful for some people but this is not a fire emblem game so don't go in expecting that it. It overall is a good game to pick up and play through with some interesting songs.

And interesting mesh between FireEmblem and Shin Megami Tensei series. The game is colorful and the music is vibrant. This is a good JRPG for beginners to start as it's not the hardest of the series, but you won't be disappointed. Solid experience.

Good last use of GCU discount. Unique style for an RPG and the music is great. Wish there were subtitles during battles or English dub options, but minor complaint. Worth a purchase if you're a fan of jRPGs with a twist and/or the Fire Emblem aesthetic.
