Not as good as old tom tom

I was assured by Tom Tom that my obsolete Tom Tom that needed replacing could be replaced by the VIA 1625TM - which was supposed to have all the same features plus more. Well it doesn't. First off it is much slower than old Tom Tom. Main disappointment is that it doesn't allow you to find POI by name. On my old TomTom I could go to "POI along route" or "near me" and type in Walmart (ie) and it would give me all their locations along my route. The new Tom Tom does not allow for finding a specific place. I need to go to Shopping and scroll through a whole list of unwanted places. Also I could have my old Tom Tom programmed by state so that it defaulted to NY (ie) and when I put in a city I only got that city in NY. The new Tom Tom goes by United States and if I put in a city - it gives me all the locations throughout the country. On my old Tom Tom I could change to another state if traveling a distance but since I use for work locally having NY as a default is quicker. Also a couple of times the new Tom Tom could not find a legitimate address, which I found quickly on my phone in the Waze app. Very disappointed as I had my old Tom Tom for about 10 years without a problem until the memory wasn't big enough to hold the updated maps and it stopped working.

    TomTom VIA 1625TM

My previous TomTom was a 6 inch screen the same as the 1625TM. The screen brightness on the 1625TM is dimmer, than the previous TomTom. On the right side of the screen there is to much room taken for icons showing gas stations and other items included, where only the traffic bar should be. In the prior format, the icons would be placed on the large screen, without being a distraction, with a choice to have the icons or not.. Now space is taken on the right side, which greatly limits the turn guidance width, and the screen display width as well, such as exits, and complex exits when being directed to other exits on a major highway such as those found when going to major cities. And as an example, the complex roads going to Clearwater Florida from the Broward County Florida area, the prior model had large constantly changing lane guidance when necessary. Now the lane guidance exit display has small lane guidance which is narrow. There is only one choice for the main display format as far as colors, and it is more on the dim side without the more vivid resolution of prior models. The prior model had many choices for a background color display, which made it possible to get a much better defined format. The prior model also had the choice of having automated sound volume, by choice, which adjusted to the speed of a car, so, faster speed resulted in higher volume, if the choice was made. The prior model had a much better starting display, which made choices much more easier to choose, on a brightly colored screen. Now the starting format is on a grayed-out rectangle affair, with a few icons and with arrows, to take you to the next screen. The prior model did have some arrows to take a person to other choices, but the choices on the next screen had large icons, and nice easy to look at colors, making the choices much easier.. The prior model was much better and much easier to navigate when making choices. And the choices available where much better with more choices to make. This model is definitely a far step backward for TomTom. I am giving it 1 star, and I may return it. Overall I definitely would not recommend TomTom1625, as it was a big disappointment in comparison to TomTom's prior model. In consideration of the display screen it could even be considered a driving distraction, because all exits with lane guidance are across a much smaller screen with a large amount, on the right side of the screen, unnecessarily taken up by icons and the traffic bar. Prior the traffic bar was not nearly as wide and at the same time adequate for displaying traffic. The traffic bar on the prior model was supplemented by voice alerts when necessary if a traffic situation ahead had delays and would offer alternative routes if available, with ongoing updates as the alternative route was reached. With a combination of voice alerts and the much smaller traffic bar, without icons being placed within it, traffic display was far better, on the prior model. There was a selection to take the alternate route or continue on the same route, if traffic delay was found by TomTom traffic.

Hi Ted, We're sorry to see that you dislike the 1625TM device.

The new Traffic bar design includes a lot of data which previously would have been shown in separate panels along the bottom edge of the screen on older models. That design actually took up more screen space than the new Traffic bar.
There are colour scheme options in the Settings - Appearance menu of the device if you would like to customise the display, but you are correct about there being only one colour scheme for the map screen.
We streamlined the menus for these units, removing some menu options which were rarely used on previous models, but the key features have all be retained either as their own menu option or by having their functions built into other processes of the device. For example, there is no need for a Search POIs menu option anymore because that functionality has been built directly into the primary Search option.

      Best,
      TomTom Team TomTomInc.
