It has been years since I played a top-down dungeon crawler style RPG and I am very glad that TTON is that game.
As RPGs go, its lineage is top notch and it presents the player with meaningful choices as well as deep dialogue trees.
I won't rehash reviews but will say that this game has beautiful graphics, an addictive storyline with many side quests, and a unique sci-fi world that is a pleasure to take respite in.

A thinking game

I was drawn to this because I'd played Planescape: Torment back when I was a kid. I never got very far since I was only 12, but the idea of going around and trying to figure out who you were was very appealing. I'm probably only 25 hours into Tides of Numenera, but I'm already wanting to start a second game so I can see what happens if I make a few different choices.
If you want a game with lots of action, you will probably be disappointed, though you can play a more action/fighting oriented character if you want, it's all in the choices you make. Even the people you decide to take with you on your journey affect your gameplay and the different approaches you can take for any given task.
The graphics are pretty good and the controls are pretty straightforward. The 'fight' mode is turn based and you can still interact with the environment, but again this is more of a thinking and strategy type of RPG. Instead of gaining experience from battles, you can earn experience from simply asking a certain question of a random NPC. You can get lots of side quests that can be completed using different methods depending on the type of character you are playing, such as sneaking past guards, simply fighting your way through, or persuading them to ignore you. The various characters you can have join your party can lend you their skills in many circumstances like if you are not skilled enough in persuasion or working with tech or even simply not strong enough.
I definitely recommend Torment:Tides of Numenera for anyone who is looking for something different.

First off, this game is not for everyone. If you are looking for constant action and combat then look elsewhere as your needs will not be met here. Torment: Tides of Numenera plays almost as pick your own adventure book and provides satisfying choices to the missions you will face throughout your journey. You will be reading A LOT as 90% of the game is reading through chat boxes while talking to NPCs and your companions. However, the story, quests, and choices you make are so unique and interesting you will be wrapped around this game's finger. It has been a long time since I have played a game that has felt so unique and has allowed me to step into a world that feels completely alien. You will feel very lost and perhaps overwhelmed at the start of the game, but do not let this deter you. There are no quest markers or giant arrows pointing you where to go. You have a simple journal to remember quests and most times you must solve them by talking to other characters or figuring out the problem yourself. There are so many options and choices throughout this game, yet there are no wrong choices. Each story, quest, problem can be solved in numerous way, each yielding their own unique result. I would highly recommend this game to anyone seeking a fantastic adventure in an alien world, an old school rpg player, or anyone that enjoys having their choices yield meaningful results throughout their play through.
Story: (10/10) Deep, engaging, and the choices you make can alter the game in a meaningful way.
Combat: (9/10) Standard turned based combat that any RPG veteran will be familiar with. Like I said before combat is almost optional in this game depending on your playstyle, but through your playstyle you can engage in more combat. The choice is yours.
Graphics: (7/10) The backgrounds and structures are gorgeous and detailed. The character models are somewhat lacking in detail. Think mid-2000's graphics.
Overall: (9/10) Can't say much more as I do not wish to spoil any of the story, but this game has felt like an absolute breath of fresh air compared to recent PS4 offerings.

I am a huge fan of Planescape: Torment, so I was very excited to hear that a "Spiritual Successor" was being made in the form of Torment: Tides of Numenera. The original was great because it was so different from any other computer RPG I had played. The story and setting of this game has all the same weird and fantastic as its predecessor. Beings that mine to eat the sparks created, voyeuristic aliens and a ghost you can only talk to by dying are only a few characters you will run across. The writing crew pulled out all the stops when it comes to the weird and creative.
My two issues with the game are that the load times are terrible (I have the PS4 version) and combat can be very boring. The combat does have a silver lining, I have been able to avoid all but one fight so far and I think I might have been able to skip it if I have made other dialogue choices.
Over all, I am enjoying this game very much, I just think it misses the mark (though just barely) of its predecessor. Also, there is a LOT of reading in this game. My understanding, well over a million words of text.

This is a great rpg. It's in the style of planescape torment that this game is fashioned after. Like planescape torment it's a little bit hard but that makes it more worth the expense. What I did was started a game and played for about two hours to get the feel and Early plot. I got killed after making a dumb mistake so I started over with the game mechanics in mind. The second playthrough went more smoothly and didn't die this time. I'm still just a couple of hours in and on my way. A great game for rpg fans.

A good game. But very dialog and exploration "in town" dependent. Combat is clunky, and you definitely won't be flying through it Neverwinter Nights style. But a decent story and it would be really fun to test out more of the dialog options, if the loading screens didn't take soooooo long!

Reminds me of the choose your own adventure books I read as a kid. Lots of reading and deciding before any major action. Missed theses types and now there is this one. May not be for everyone but I really enjoy this game. Hopefully more games like this keep being made but sooner.

Definitely not for everyone, this game relies heavily on the dialogue. You'll be reading a ton in between the dungeons and if you're into this old school style then you'll probably really enjoy this game.

This game is reminiscent of old-school story driven RPGs where there is a lot of dialogue and options to choose from. It has a great atmosphere and setting. Just be prepared to read a lot.

As the name suggests this game is a spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment and even had some of the original team involved in its production. Gameplay is very traditional CRPG style which doesn't always translate well to a controller but as this is not a twitch based game there is plenty of time to acclimate to the controls.
Please be forewarned that you will spend the majority of your time reading. If that sounds fun to you then you will probably enjoy this game, but if you are looking for something more action focused you may want to look elsewhere.

Game play was designed for PC and translates to PS4 as best it can. Interesting game with many hours of gameplay vested and still enjoy everything.
