I really really wanted to like this laptop. It had good specs, should have performed well, but has several glowing flaws that even the store display models have.
1) Green screen playing videos. Yes, even the Windows DEMO video plays in green!! How poor is that. OK, easily resolved by installing something like K-lite codec pack but this is real sloppy out the box.
2) Wi-fi connection kept dropping. Totally frustrating and almost unuseable. Fix involved installing new drivers for the wi-fi and disabling the power saving feature that was being too aggressive and turning the wi-fi off to save power lol. Once again, fixable but real sloppy out the box.
3) The trackpad. Good lord. I have NEVER in all my years of using laptops experienced a worse trackpad. It freezes, refuses to respond, and dissappears for minutes at a time on occasion (and yes, the trackpad was activated). At this point, as the laptop was for my wife we'd both had enough with a brand new laptop that can't even get the basics right.
4) Other observations and notes: There are around 4GB of updates from the get-go... I am certain people complained it was slow due to it downloading in the background and them not realizing it. AFTER all the updates were done/applied and update turned off, this machine still randomly froze, refused to respond even to key presses and just felt glitchy. It has relatively nice hardware for the price... not understanding why it performed so badly in exceptionally light usage.
After reading countless other reviews of this and other similar Toshiba laptop, I happily returned it for store credit (outside the 14 days return period unfortunately). Replaced it with a Touch screen HP i3 with 6GB, and that has been an absolute dream to use for my wife. Totally flawless experience for her after setting it up :-)
I do not recommend the Toshiba Laptop,

Brand response from ToshibaStaff

Thank you for the review, ADubb, and sorry to hear about the blue screen problem.
One possible source of the problem could be replacement of Toshiba-supplied and customized drivers with generic drivers, by using the Windows Update tool to update "optional" software. (Using Windows Update to install "critical" software should not be an issue.)
If that doesn't resolve the problem, please contact Toshiba support at 800-457-7777 for more troubleshooting help.
Thanks again for the feedback and for choosing Toshiba.

Alot of you might be looking on here for a legitimate gaming review. Well here you go. I bought a copy of this and the Elder Scrolls Anthology upon arrival. I have played Morrowind, Oblivion & I have been playing Skyrim. You can play Skyrim on medium settings. It works fine with little to no lag.
I have also played:
- Smite
- League of Legends
- Unturned
- World of Warcraft
- Dragon Nest
- The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
- Orion: Prelude
- Amnesia
- Far Cry 3
PROS:
- Good amount of recent and previous titles able to play right from the beginning.
- Fast speed
- Quad Core A-8 Processor makes games run fast.
- Good backlit 15 inch display
- very functional keyboard
CONS:
- Touchpad is quite horrible
- long startup time
- Windows 8.1
- updates take a long time
ADVICE:
- Pick up a gaming mouse
This is a VERY decent, VERY affordable gaming laptop. I have enjoyed it quite alot. It plays the games i want to play with little to no hassle. Of course this game isn't going to play brand new demanding titles like Far Cry 4, Titanfall, Dragon Age or high quality titles like that. But there are tons of games that work perfectly on this laptop. And at the price this is a steal.
NOW if you'll excuse me I'm going back to playing Smite.

So far, so good and I've had it for two months now. The only complaint is it comes loaded with Windows 8 which I'm learning to work around. The only annoyance is a sluggish, or stalling mouse pointer when using the built in mouse pad. I understand this is a common Windows 8 issue from some quick web searches. Once I have some time to resolve this I'll be completely happy though still waiting for that FREE Windows 10 upgrade I keep hearing about. Would I buy it again? For $299 - yes!.

I've had this laptop for seven years. I bought it brand new from Best Buy seven years ago. It's got me through working from home 40 plus hours a week to starting back college. I did upgrade the ram to 12 GB not the max 16 GB, but the laptop lasted me years without complaints. Even the factory battery lasted that long and would still hold a charge. It's sad to say they don't make Toshiba products at all anymore they're sold by Dynabook I'm not a fan of them. Anyway, after all of these years, I upgraded to the HP Desktop All in one, and what a difference in seven years of technology makes. After I dropped the Toshiba laptop on the hardwood floor making the laptop break into a flat pancake and breaking off the power source from the motherboard. I will miss this laptop and its worth every penny I paid for it back in the day.

This my second Toshiba Laptop and it's a solid as my first one. Long life on it's Lithium-Ion Battery, Great Display and Keyboard (although I still prefer the wireless external mouse I bought to the mouse pad and buttons built in). It took a lot of retraining to learn Windows 8.1 after using Windows XP so many years and I understand that Windows 10 is around the corner in 2015 with similar layout of operating system functions that Windows XP and Windows 7 had due to popular demands! The computer has a great readable screen, plenty of memory, plenty of storage at 500 GB and a DVD or CD + and - player/writer, plus an HDMI port to hook up to your widescreen 1080i Big Screen TV as a second monitor, and Speakers built-in or headphone jack with microphone input. All this for $299.99 on sale the best buy in comparison to so many laptops out there and lower cost than many tablets!

Overall the laptop was decent good for the price, it handle your basic task very well, the speakers were not the very loud at all so a pair of headphones is a must, the only gripe I had was the responsive of the touch pad was not very responsive it lagged a bit tried updating the driver and changing the settings for it but still rather sluggish, just went with wireless miss which I use majorly of the time anyway, if the laptop is for basic stuff perfect or for a kid to use that you won't regret then breaking.

My daughter needed a PC with a dual core processor and a minimum speed of 2gb with a minimum of 4mb memory and 10gb hard drive for a new work-from-home job she was applying for. For only $299, I found the Toshiba Satellite, and it passed the online speed test and minimum requirements she needed for the job. She was hired for the full time Customer Service Rep position and is highly satisfied with the PC's performance.

I purchased this computer after reading multiple reviews on multiple sites and considering my own experience with a Toshiba Satellite laptop albeit with an intel I5. To be honest there is a slight difference in speed between the two laptops. One searches the internet faster (Intel)and one performs better with videos and games (AMD).. the only negative I have is with the mouse pad (very frustrating to use). I solved the issue by purchasing a wireless mouse. For the price 350. this was a deal.

This lap top has wonderful graphics and features. I have had other higher priced laptops and this one blows them out of the water. There are a few things this is lacking. The touchpad freezes and the sound quality isn't quite stereo, but both of those can be fixed easily. Well worth it if you're looking for high performing without breaking the bank.

I'm still adjusting to Windows 8. The mouse pad seems to inexplicable 'stick' at times and mouse won't move. But I haven't yet taken advantage of my Geek Squad assistance, so that's on me. The laptop is lighter than my previous Dell. Like that it has greatly increased RAM, storage and allows faster online access than I had before.

We are homeschooling our sons so we needed a basic computer strictly for them so they stay off my higher end desktop. This is a good basic computer for the $299 we bought it for. The only gripe I now have is a button came off the keyboard. The Geek Squad couldn't fix it. You get what you pay for. Was able to swap it for new computer no questions asked (2 weeks after buying). The laptop was not man handled so can't see why it popped off. Not sure if I would recommend. Bought three laptops so had to go cheap. Would NOT buy for myself to use.

I really wanted to like this laptop, and maybe if the problems I have could be fixed, I would like it more. The track pad drives me crazy on this thing! It either doesn't respond or it is uper slow. I also can't stay connected to the Internet. No other laptops or wifi enabled devices in my house have this trouble.
I'm not sure if I got a lemon or what, but I spend more time waiting on the cursor to catch up or reconnecting to the Internet than I do actually using the thing.

This computer is good for the price or for a second computer for the house. The only problem is that sometimes the mouse arrow freezes or gets lost on the page and takes a while to locate it. It doesn't happen often so I would still but it for the price.

I was looking for a laptop that had good features but didn't cost much. At an early point of ownership, all is good. Windows 8 is still hard to get used to and getting rid of unwanted programs still is a challenge.

This is a nice home machine. I state "home" because it is a bigger box, although that's what i wanted. A bigger screen, portable when necessary, but otherwise just a better space saver at home than a desktop. The laptop is very light. The display great. The processor is nimble enough. Same comments as other reviewers about windows 8 - just not a fan, at least not yet.

The Toshiba laptop I bought is a good machine. However, I really don't like Windows 8 and I don't like how the mouse works. It either goes crazy and does things on its own, or, it sticks and freezes.
