I bought it for upstairs rooms because my internet router was downstairs, and the connection was weak on the floor above. I can have 4 devices running online with good connection while using this device.

Cuts the 5ghz speed in half no matter what you try

I wanted to like it, i wanted it to work I got starlink and implemented the split band network one with 2.4 and the other with 5ghz. Believe me I tried every iteration in the tool box. What will happen is your 5 ghz will always be throttled. Almost half, always. Your 2.4ghz will be almost the same as it was. This repeater is not repeating the 5ghz from router to repeater to client. its 5ghz from router to repeater then 2.4 to client OR 2.4 from router to repeater and 5ghz to client, either way its throttled. I used multiple speed test sources side by side connected close by and upstairs 3 floors from router, same scheme every time. It will improve the signal strength but the performance is actually worse no matter how close or far you put the repeater near the router when it comes to DL and UL speeds and ping. Its going back, all my areas even when weak like 15% strength perform better without the repeater giving me 75% . If you don't believe it buy it.

Hi,
Thank you for your review. Please bear in mind Wi-Fi extenders utilize half-duplex transmission. As a result, throughput when connecting to the extender may be reduced when compared to the router. This is an industry standard for Wi-Fi extenders and is not exclusive to TP-Link.
In your case, we recommend relocating the unit to a position in your home where the router's Wi-Fi signal is sufficiently strong; yet far enough from the router to effectively extend its range.
If you'd like assistance with any of these steps, please reach out to our free support team using any of the resources included with the product, or from our official website, and we'll gladly have a Support Agent follow up with you directly.

No tether software for newer versions > 1

This unit works but the software interface no longer supports this device. When I first purchased this device it worked well and still does with one exception, the tp-tether software no longer supports this device. The initial installation worked as the instructions said I downloaded the software and it found the device and added it to my network. Everything was fine. Then about two weeks later I opened the tether software to check the device and found it could not find my device. I immediately contact the TP support. He explained the software on supports version 1 devices and I have version 3. Duh someone should notify the developers that they need to push out a new update as the boxes say download the tether software to connect the device. Seems like the advertisements team and developers at TP-Link need to communicate more so the know what product versions are being sold so the software supports all the newer products. For this reason I give this product a two star rating. I can no longer connect to the device or monitor it. The support representative said oh it’s working you don’t need the software. Really.

Hi,
Thank you for your review. The TP-Link Tether app supports the RE305, and in your case we first recommend ensuring your smartphone is not connected to a VPN service while attempting to access the device via Tether, as it will interfere with the LAN connection between your smartphone and the device.
We regret to hear your initial interaction with our Support Team was anything less than satisfactory, and we would appreciate another opportunity to follow up with you and to help address your concerns. At your earliest convenience, please send an e-mail with your contact information and a link to this review to [email protected] and we'll have a Support Agent follow up with you directly.

We have our router in another building but needed wifi to reach our main dwelling. This wifi extender has done the trick, as I get a strong signal now in most of my house. Would highly recommend as an inexpensive fix for the "where's my internet?" problem.

Hi,
If you haven't noticed a significant improvement in WiFi coverage after installing the extender, we recommend relocating the unit to a position within your home where the router's WiFi signal is sufficiently strong; yet far enough from the router to effectively extend its range. Please verify the RE status LED is indicating a solid connection.
If you'd like assistance with any of these steps, please send an e-mail with your contact information and a link to this review to [email protected] and we'll gladly have a Support Agent follow up with you directly.

Now my Zoom session never complains that my Internet connection is unstable when I use my laptop in the dining room (2 rooms away from the Verizon FIOS router). We'll see how this works after I switch to Optimum this weekend.
