In my ideal world, I would walk into the store and pick up a 4TB WD RED hard drive for my Drobo. This is not ideal and I had a bad drive so placing an order online wasn't going to happen. I needed a drive and I needed it fast. The 1TB WD was the best drive Best Buy had in store so I went for it. I'm happy that my Drobo excepted the drive and it's been working flawlessly for a few weeks now. I'm happy with the speed I've been getting from my Drobo using these drives. I really don't have anything bad to say other than I wish I would have had the opportunity to pick up a bigger drive the same day.

I needed this to fill a drive bay slot in my Drobo USB storage device. It "fit the bill" without flaw. It's a smaller Drobo than the others I own and the 1TB capacity was exactly what I required.

I am very happy with my WD HDD purchase. Easy install and I downloaded a clean install of windows 10 without any junk that came with computer. Never had my computer run faster and quick response for all files and apps. Start up 23 seconds from HP logo. Thanks Western Digital!

Hard drive replacement for my Imac

Instead of having my 21" Imac upgraded at the Apple store I purchased the Mainstream 1TB Internal Serial ATA Hard Drive at best buy and did it myself. Well to be exact I let my son do the work as it has been his passion for many years. Not only did it save me around $175, but I upgraded from 500 gig to 1TB so it was a double win.

The low cost of the WD 1 TB internal drive is excellent, the installation is quick and easy and it works perfectly. I have been using it for over a month now with no problems. It comes with all of the installation screws to install inside the computer (I have a desktop) but you will have to purchase the power cable and the cable to connect to the motherboard ($5-$20).
I installed this drive in my wife's 5 year old HP desktop and it fit perfectly and it runs perfectly. It is super fast, and meets all of the needs of ordinary daily computing including word processing, email, net surfing and research all at the same time with no strain on the drive. I did not replace anything else in the computer. I did not need any other startup software from the manufacturer to get it started either. It worked right out of the box.
While a lot of computer experts are hung up on technical details and each and every specification; most non-tech people just want their computer to work again or store more data for them. This drive will accomplish both of those objectives. It is fast at 7,700 rpm, fast enough for the average person's usage. It is also very quiet, how quiet does it have to be? It is certainly as quiet as the drive that came with the computer originally.
The only bewares are that you have to be a little savvy to understand that you already have, or have access to, startup programs installed on your computer and that the computer is set to make the drive startup and function properly. Also, you have be able to plug the drive into the correct slot on the motherboard and know that there may be other programs your specific computer might need that could be necessary for the computer to recognize and utilize the drive you are installing. All of these items are not usually mentioned in most articles on installing drives but these are usually the issues that come up as problems in installing new or additional drives.
I am certainly no expert, but I can usually research enough to solve most problems. Not everyone has the time or resources to be able to do this. I would recommend that anyone undertaking a replacement or addition of a hard drive to do their research first.
That being said, this is an excellent choice for your replacement or additional hard drive.

Bad Drive after 1+ month

I installed the WD Blue Desktop 1 TB drive due to a SMART prompt from Windows that the previous Seagate Barracuda 750 GB with a 2009-08-12 date code should be replaced. The Western Digital ran fine at first, but soon things were getting slower and slower. Check disk and WD Utilities eventually revealed that excessive number of bad sectors were cropping up. The WD drive was so corrupt I could not clone it, but had to rely on a backup. I'm still waiting for the WD replacement, but in the meantime I decided to go back to original brand (Seagate) that did provide many years of reliable service. Not sure if this was a fluke or a bad manufacturing run, but I don't have the time or energy to waste on either trusting if the replacement will work or dealing with the slow response from WD.

Fast hard drive

This is a fast hard drive considering its not solid state. I ran some bench mark test using a popular program. Here are the results. Note in parenthesis is the speed of a 2+ year old PNY solid state drive.
Minimium speed: 53 MB/s (110.2 MB/s PNY SSD drive)
Maximum speed: 180.6 MB/s (160.2 MB/s PNY SSD drive)
Average Speed: 138.1 MB/s (145.4 MB/s PNY SSD drive)
Access time: 17.4 ms (0.27 ms PNY SSD drive)
Burst speed: 263,8 MB/s (129.1 MB/s PNY SSD drive)
Conclusion; The 1TB rotating hard drives are very fast and competitive with SSD drives especially when dealing with huge video files like 5GB and 8GB files. SSD drive have such a fast access time they seem and feel faster and more responsive than rotating drives but let me tell you SSD drives do slow down big time after 2 years of service and you can see from my test results that the 2 year old SSD drive and WD rotating drive are close in speed. I have rotating hard drives that still work after 10 years of service. If you need absolute best reliability and good performance with huge video files go with a rotating hard drive like the 1TB WD hard drive. If you play games on your pc you will want a SSD drive. You will notice the SSD speed advantage during your computer boot-up but after that you bill hardly notice a difference when the SSD is a few years old. Of course each brand is different and the technology gets better and better all the time but so does the rotating drives. The advantage of the 1TB drive is it's a single platter drive, simple, reliable, fast.

Nice solid 7200rpm 1tb drive. Installation is a snap. It's a great basic hard drive for desktops - not suitable for surveillance or NAS applications but perfect to replace a dead or dying drive in a desktop or to add additional storage either internally if you have the space or externally if you have a chasis.

Great Storage drive

This drive is AMAZING for its intended purpose. It is not a very fast hard drive - This is not the sort of storage that you would want as your primary drive.. If you want a fast drive, either get a Solid State Drive or 'WD Desktop Performance' or 'WD Black' hard drive (but these will be more expensive per GB and will consumer more power, except for the SSD which consumes less power). This drive has five very good aspects - 1) It has a LOT of storage for the price, 2) It consumes less than half of the power of a standard HDD, 3) It is extremely reliable, 4) It is much quieter than a standard HDD, and 5) It produces a lot less heat than a standard HDD. The best use for this drive would be as a secondary drive to hold a lot of content that you may not want to put on your SSD (which tends to be very expensive per/GB).

After much review research regards use of hard drives for video surveillance equipment; took a chance on the desktop WD version. Yay for me! Works like a charm for my home CCTV low end four camera system. Quiet, reliable, and plenty of storage. Probably would have gone with the video drive if I had a higher end system- but for generic home security recording...the one fits the bill at a reasonable price. Been running non stop for several months now- review of footage is flawless (can't expect the recording to be better than the camera resolution!). It works. It is reliable. And quiet (mine is housed in a four sided cubby about 8 feet from my head while sleeping)- barely hear a whirring and that gets lost in the sound of anything; open window, furnace, AC, etc.

This drive replaced a failing Seagate 3 TB drive. That drive was about a year and a half old. I read a lot of good reviews about this one and a really bad 40% failure rate one about the Seagate 3 TB. This drive is cool and quiet. I'm using Linux Mint 17.2 KDE. I'm going to limit desktops to 1 TB drives from now on.

7200 rpm is still pretty fast and dependable. This WD 1TB Blue has been a buy for every system I've built over the passed six years. What used to sell for around $200, you can get now for $60 is a huge selling point. These drives are great as a master or slave storage drive. Never had any of these fail on me. I don't recommend WD green drives (due to their very slow performance and non-stressful intended use and if you force them to run hard for gaming which will wear those drives down to corruption). My WD blues are still running after six years with no signs of slow downs or sector read/write errors. Will buy again! Kudos Western Digital.

Excellent value, good solid drive. Speeds as expected. Nothing special, but the price tag is right.
If you need a bunch of drives for system images, data archiving, or any application where speed isn't absolutely paramount, it's hard to beat the WD Blue 1TB for price and convenience.
(By no means are the drives slow for what they are, they're just no SLC NAND SSD... but again, neither is their price tag.)

I have used WD drives for over 40 years, both internal and external, and they have never failed me. I got this drive as a second disk for my new computer. I plan to install Linux on it, and configure the machine to dual boot. I chose this particular drive for its speed - 7200rpm. I know it will work in the configuration I plan, as I have done it before. I got it at a very good price during the Black Friday sale.
