It was a bit more of a challenge to set this up than I anticipated. When adding several other users, it is even more challenging. A video or two to help decipher the written instructions would be great!

I read a lot of negative reviews on this unit, mostly around the fact that many people who purchase this drive expect to attach this drive to their computer and start transferring files like they do with other USB drives.
This is not a USB-attached drive and it's meant to be used as a direct access drive either. This is a cloud-storage *backup* drive that connects to your network via Ethernet cable so it is never physically attached to any computer. In essence this is your personal version of Google Drive or iCloud at home, uploading and downloading files to the drive using either a web interface or an app on your desktop or phone/tablet.
You can provide yourself and family/friends cloud access to your home drive from the outside, via Western Digital's cloud service. It can even backup your home computers automatically and can also backup your mobile device's photos and videos automatically. Once set, this also gives you the option of accessing your files from work or while traveling and you can setup family shared folders so your family in other states/countries can also share photos and files directly.
When loading up the drive with your backups or when transferring files in bulk, be prepared to wait. This is not going to be like transferring files via USB as most people are used to. When doing your first backup and transferring hundreds of gigs and tens of thousands of files, it's going to feel like it's crawling compared to USB transfers. This is to be expected as your speed will be limited by your network, wiring, and computer's network adapter speeds. Having a gigabit network is a plus as long as your equipment is gigabit as well. And to be clear, network transfers will never compare to transferring direct to drive via USB 2.0 or 3.0. Definitely download the tools provided by WD to make this job happen automatically so you can set it and walk away, allowing it to sync folders for you.
And to reiterate, this is a backup drive and that is a good thing. Don't expect to just open a folder and launch a file to work on it. To work on files stored on this drive, you will have to download them to your computer to work on them then upload them again when done. So instead, work on these files on your regular drives then let the sync tools take care of backing it up for you. Or, if you really don't want to wait, upload it manually yourself.
For our home office setup, our two computers have the usual internal drives plus an external USB drive for what we call quick backup/running backups. These drives (selected folders) are then backed up automatically to the WDCloud unit for safekeeping.
If you use this drive as intended by WD, as a backup drive and file sharing platform for your family/friends, you're going to love it. If you think this will be just another USB drive to dump files on, you're going to be disappointed.

Looks good so far. Accessing the My Cloud device was straight forward and setting up user accounts and share folders seemed uncomplicated. But then I tried to access folders via File Explorer and kept on getting an error message every time I tried. I tried customer support and they were very slow to respond. I ended up downloading and installing the WD My Cloud Desktop application. After accessing the drive through that app, I closed it, rebooted, and lo and behold I was able to access the drive via File Explorer. So I'm happy now, but why was this necessary? It was a time waster. I haven't played with the WD Sync or smartware programs because I use another program for syncing so I can't speak to those. I'm tempted to try tho. I have used the phone app for both an iPhone and Android and it works pretty well. And remote desktop connection seems to work fine too.
So I take off a star for the issue I had installing. But right now, seems a lot better than my old Seagate Central which died just over about a month after the warranty expired (I asked them to honor it, but they would not).

If used correctly, this device can improve the security of your electronic ID and the security of your data. I have been increasingly concerned about the privacy of my data with a fair amount of it stored in various cloud services (Microsoft, Google, etc.), which led me to look at alternate options for keeping my data. This device provides a viable alternative to these services.
While setup on my network was not quite as simple / straightforward as the marketing literature would have you believe, it is no rocket-science provided you read the instructions carefully and follow the steps which are very well documented in the user guidelines.
The model I purchased (4 TB) is a massive amount of space which would have cost tens of thousands of dollars 10 - 15 years ago, but is now available to us - Joe Public.
I have about 6,000 various PDF's and office documents, 4,000 music files (songs) stored in various computers / cloud services and about 16,000 digital photographs (something of an amateur photographer) on separate storage devices. All of these are now in a single place and available for all machines I have granted access to (laptop, desktop, tablets and phones) from any location.
The logical concern is: what happens if this storage device fails? Got that covered too with a backup Passport storage device attached to it. WD has been smart enough to create additional software to provide automated backup which you can schedule as you choose, making your single point of failure more secure. Of course, this will not work if you have some disaster (like a fire) which destroys both devices.
A final benefit is that my son (who is deployed overseas with the military) is now able to stream music from the storage device provided he has internet access.
All in all, great value for the money. Your experience of this product will initially be impacted by how well you read the setup and use instructions so I suggest taking a few minutes going through them before hooking it up to your network.

Pros:
This NAS drive works well overall.
The setup was simple and connecting from other computers in the network worked well.
The WDMyCloud works well with the Android tablets.
Cons:
Writing is much slower than I would expect over a Gigabit Ethernet connection. I connected several portable External USB hard drives to the USB Expansion Port with no results! I finally had success after connecting my 750GB USB3 WD My Passport. I tried to copy a 35GB backup file from the Passport onto the My Cloud and discovered the real meaning of slow!
Conclusion:
I like this item and would recommend it, as a cost effective network storage for moderate use.
I wish the USB port were a direct connection for faster writing.

Having shopped around for a while, this 4TB has all the space for my entire family of four to individually access our music, photos etc.... If you can afford the extra money, it works out to be better 'bang for the buck' with more than enough room for future needs. Set up and use was easy and the product works as advertised.

Set up was a bit confusing due to supplied software. The supplied software is clumsy to use and is much worse than just accessing it like another drive on the network via explorer. It is not particularly fast via wifi. The good points are that it was cheap and does hold a lot of data. The bad is supplied software and speed (lack of)

Easy to set up physically, but that where it ends. This product has a learning curve that I would rate as 8 out of 10. And 10 isn't good. Once installed the owner is directed to WD website to download "Learning to Use" software. Also instructional videos are available. The drive needs to "think" which makes it slow to use. Large amounts of data at one time almost drives the device crazy. Learning curve, slow transfer, and allowing access to relatives is also hard to figure out. Maybe once I learn to use all the features, the pain of setting up will be worth it.

The WD - My Cloud 4TB Personal Cloud Storage External Hard Drive (NAS) is simply GREAT and a nice price (approx $190) for 4TB of network storage.
1. Easy to install. Literally, take it out of the box, connect the cables. Each device on your network is able to find/access the NAS.
2. Quite fast. The NAS is quite fast - However, be aware that your network speed comes into play, so it is not as fast as a local hard drive. I typically get about 11 Mbs when transferring large files to the NAS.
3. Easy to access. Within the home network, I can access the NAS from a variety of computers/devices: Win7, Win8, Tablet, and SmartTV. The NAS appears as a device on the network (either by IP or by the name "MyCloud".
4. Access from outside my home network. Using the MyCloud application on my Windows 7 PC, I am able to access my NAS from anywhere. It requires a secure login. I am able to transfer files to/from the NAS - using drag/drop. Apps such as Word/Excel/etc can also open files on the NAS simply by double-click the file; however, it does something to open a temporary copy of the file "~97y0798709767-myfile.docx" which is awkward - but when you SAVE the doc it saves to the original file.
5. SmartTV - I store video on the NAS and use my SmartTV to access my video library on the NAS. The performance is very good.
6. Connecting a local hard drive. The NAS has a USB3 port. You are able to connect a hard drive to the USB3 port. This expands the capacity of the NAS. From your PC or over the internet, you can access the internal NAS drive or the externally connected hard drive. There is a way to locally transfer files between the NAS and the connected hard drive - eliminating network traffic - but I was only partially successful doing so.
All in all, this is an awesome product. Does exactly what it claims do to. Fast. Nice price. Yes! I would recommend this product.

The My Cloud 4TB drive has a ton of space for all your music, movies, and photos. It also works with my Roku so I can stream all my music from the My Could to my living room through the Roku Media Player app. It was pretty easy to set up. The only complaint I have is that it's not as fast as I would hope it would be. It's connected via an ethernet cable and the speeds are a little slow when copying large files. Small files are OK, but when I backed up the files off my PC onto it, it took a few hours. Other than that, it's been great.

Can't beat the price for 4tb. I have been using it to stream movies through dlna, and it works well. Passwords can be reset easily so to store movies, music, and photos it works great. If you want to store anything that has more private data like tax returns, etc , you make want to get something with an encryption option.

So far I have installed 3 of these drives and they are relatively easy to install and software is easy to configure if you are somewhat technical. There are some quirks with the software in that I was not able to set up separate file folders for my 2 Macs, they dump all files into one. But for Windows I like that I can easily set up password protected file folders for each computer on the network. But if you do that, each has to have separate user/passwords. What I don't like is how hot this thing gets as I have had very bad experience with WD drive failures over many years. It also is very slow, so when you set up multiple computers at once, it literally can take a couple days to backup all of them. Thankfully the software does it automatically at night. But for the money, this is probably your best consumer grade backup drive for networks.

I purchased this for my husband. He found it quite easy to hook up. We use it for both our computers and 2 smartphones. I have a ton of photos and recipes. We scan everything - receipts for products we buy, paperwork for bills, insurance, etc.
The unit is not very large, about 6-3/4" x 4". It sits neatly on his desk along with the modem and other accessories.
Now we can access all our files from just about anywhere.
It has been operating smoothly for over 2 months now. We are very happy!

Not very long ago sharing files across the Internet required high level geek skills knowing things like FTP, DHCP and port forwarding. Today there are many cloud storage options but they come with a monthly or annual cost and have limitations. MyCloud is simple to set up and get running and gives me access to my movies, music, pictures and documents anywhere I have access to the Internet. MyCloud even let's me access these files with my SmartTV. A great product at a reasonable price.

We have SEVERAL 'devices' in our household between cellphones, iPads, iTouches, and cameras. Getting it all set up was a lot easier than i expected, but I think that's also the only real fault too. It uploads everything to a new folder for your specified device in the PUBLIC folder. It doesn't seem to allow me to upload the pics from my phone, as an example, to my own personal folder. It downloads them to a folder for my phone within the PUBLIC folder, then I have manually move them to another folder to not everything is public. I think i get why everything defaults to the Public folder, but if they could change the way this works, it would be perfect.
Lots of storage (I got the 4TB), super easy to access from where ever (although easier on data if you're on a wifi), and super easy to move download/upload and look at everything.

Purchased this as a way to have a portable back-up for my computer and my video collection. I really appreciate how easy it is to set-up on a network, however I will admit, I still haven't figured out how to do a back-up from my Windows 8 laptop to the drive wirelessly.
Only other complaint is that the actual interface of the drive is sometimes a little too restrictive/confusing (running into issues editing file details) and it still runs on what chrome feels is "unsecure" java.
Really, in the end, for what I need it to do, the drive is wonderful. Hopefully I'll figure out how to fix the kinks and then I can say it is perfect.
