Customers admire the My Cloud EX2 Ultra 16TB for its storage capacity, describing it as having "a good amount of storage." They also appreciate the easy setup process, with comments like "easy setup and setting up accounts and copying files." The RAID feature is another advantage, as one customer mentioned, "I set up a RAID 1." However, the documentation could be improved, as some customers have expressed frustration with it.

Liking this item a lot. Access to files from anywhere is cool. The WD Cloud App is awesome.
Set up was relatively easy but I could have definately benefited from having a pro help with set-up and configuration.

Great for home use and as a Plex Server

I got the 16TB version of this and really like it. I switched the RAID mode to get the full 16TB, as it comes with mirroring enabled, which is good if you want multiple copies of your data replicated across drives in the event one fails. You can also configure it as JBOD.
The interface is extremely easy to use and I was able to plug it in to my router and get it up and running in a matter of minutes. I use this to store large files, and really all kinds of files, that I want to access from all of my devices and have had no issues with it in that regard. It also has the MyCloud function, which lets you access the files stored on the device from anywhere you can get an internet connection. You do have to create an account with WD to enable this, and then you can download the application for whatever device you are using to access it.
While I use this to store all kinds of files, I also use it as a Plex server, and though I thought it would not perform well with its limited RAM and CPU, it has no issue with handling a few streams to different devices at a time. It also has 2 USB ports for plugging in additional drives.
One neat feature is that you can set it up so that when you plug a flash drive in, it copies everything from the flash drive, so you can back up your flash drives easily. It also has the ability to install several useful applications, but some require purchasing a license or subscription. I already have a Plex pass, so that was no issue. I did install GoodSync and it works flawlessly. Initially I resisted using GoodSync because I didn't want to pay for it, but I am constantly downloading and moving data around and this takes the pain out of having to manually transfer everything whenever you need to transfer files.
Time will tell how reliable it is, but for home use, I would say this is a great device. Just keep in mind that when it comes, mirroring is enabled by default, so you will only see it as one 8TB HDD.

Great mass storage with redundancy

This a great product for beginners that need to store lots of data, have redundancy (not backup) and simple to configure. The My Cloud EX2 already comes configure in Raid 1 so of the 16TB, you have 8 TB of storage with 8 as redundancy. If one drive fails you just buy a new one, replace the bad one and it copies the files for you. And this version is upgrade-able to (2) 14TB hard drives.

Don’t wait to buy a dependable back up! This one has two 8 tb hard drives. Connection and set up is relatively quick and easy and is reasonably quiet. The initial back up takes quiet a bit of time to complete. Backs up content from several Macs and one HP laptop.

set up was easy, I did not set up the MyCloud internet option because I am using it as a home server and have no need to access from outside my LAN.
I've had some hiccups with an error transferring large files (~1GB) but I'm not sure if the problem lies with the WD NAS or my HP LapTop. rebooting one or both has cleared the error. I have not gotten around to backing up files from my Lenovo desktop yet to see if the problem arises with it. both are running Windows 10. I set up a a RAID 1. tried to hang a 2TB external drive, but it did not like it at all (might be because it was set up as JBOD VS the RAID 1 of the WD NAS)

EX2 Runs Great, But Drive Must Be Mapped to PC

So far, mechanically/electronically it works fine. I've managed to get all of my data loaded by mapping the drive to my laptop file directory. My only beef is that this is unlike the other great WD external hard drives, in that the instruction manual (download) and the quick set-up instructions (in-box) are too basic and other documentation is not helpful for anyone less than an engineer. If you use a PC, you are going to need to Google on mapping your EX2 to your computer file system. After completing that, it's easy. But nowhere does it tell you that this must be done.

I purchased based on my son's recommendation. He used the default Raid 1 setup to backup and to archive my files. Initial setup seemed easy. I can access it with my Tablets & phones using The WD app. I only keep photos and music on the cloud. So far, so good with it. It got good reviews, and I agree.

I purchased this for use in a small office where 5 or 6 people need access to it, both in-office on the network and outside the office over the internet.
It took a little bit of work to get that all set up. Interestingly enough, the cloud portion was easier than the in-office network stuff. Inside the office, Mac users saw the device right away but Windows users did not. I was able to resolve that by mapping a drive and "forcing" a connection on the Windows machines.
I don't think that's an issue with the drive, though - I think that's a Windows issue.
Good price for a good amount of storage.
I have had to reboot it a couple of times when cloud users were unable to connect, but that was quick and easy to do.

I was a bit worried by a few reviews, but am incredibly happy I picked up this NAS! The setup was fast and simple, and the web interface intuitive. I am an IT professional and really appreciated access to enable SSH and disable many of the features I did not want to use for added security and stability. I reconfigured mine as RAID 0 since it would be nothing more than an inconvenience/annoyance if I were to lose the data I'm streaming from here and wanted the maximum speed to read/write data. The web interface is simple and sufficiently powerful and media sharing is easy. I purchased the 16TB model, pre-populated with two 8TB WD Red drives. The only real negative I've run into is that it is not a silent running device. It's not "noisy," but you can hear the fan and drives. A little sound deadening material in the case would have been welcome. Overall I'm very satisfied and would recommend this product. I'll update this review if I have any early/unexpected drive failures or problems - but as of now, it's smooth sailing!

Takes a bit to get it all set up & running -- slow to back up over WiFI but relatively fast using LAN connection. Doesn't play well with Sony XBR65x850D, but I think it's more of a problem with the TV then the NAS. Videos that the TV will play from a flash drive, the TV says aren't a reconizable format when I try to play them from the NAS.

Way Too Loud

Great amount of space. Absolutely horrible rating on “quietness”. At first I just heard the fans a few times and I was like “Okay, if I only have to hear that once in a while, I can deal with it.” Now that I have over 3TB loaded, the fans are constantly running and noisy as you know what. It’s not your ordinary fan sound either. That I would be okay with. I mean, a PC fan isn’t even this annoying. Every review I read said it was loud. I really didn’t think this is what they meant. Not sure I’m going to keep it for $750. I could probably build a NAS tower with a lot quieter fans for this price. Sadly, as much time as I’ve spend moving things to this, I’ll probably return it.

This is a great way to add another layer of backing up to protect my data. I have lost significant amounts of data in the past and this can be a very painful process to recover from. I love the online backup and the RAID mirroring setup of this device!

Best with T10/100/1000 LAN connections -- gets slow transferring using WiFi connection. Not the fault of the My Cloud.
