Amazing Starter NAS on a Budget

I bought this to replace my aging MyCloud that surprisingly has lasted over 10 years and was running out of space. I picked up two WD Red 12TB HDDs on sale to pair with this. Setup was easy and only took a few minutes. The included software guides you through the entire process and lets you know about applications that the NAS can run natively. The longest part of the process for me was configuring the drives in RAID0. Everything runs smoothly and I have no complaints about it. It even runs my Plex server and is able to handle 4k videos with zero stutters or other issues.

I needed a NAS hard drive for sharing files with co-workers and across computers on our network. I have two hard drive that I pulled out of a security DVR a couple years ago. I installed them and used the MyCoud website to format them. Everything runs great and works perfectly in our work flow in the office.

This is a very good option if you're looking to have a network-based storage drive or (Network Accessible Storage). This unit allows you to add one or two hard drives to be configured either as total storage for maximum capacity (JBOD) or in RAID configuration where one drive continuously backs up the other for data backup and redundancy. The drives are accessible through your network and, once configured, will show up as network drives. The WD software gives you many configuration options and also allows for remote access to your data from outside your wifi network, similar to what you get with services like Dropbox. Keep in mind this unit cannot be connected straight to your computer through USB. It can only be connected to and accessed through your network. It has a 1 gigabit lan network connection and 2x USB ports for connecting additional USB hard drives to expand storage even further. The connected USB drives will also be accessible through your network and can also be configured to back up the internal drives in this unit. This is however a "diskless" unit, meaning it doesn't come with any drives. You need to purchase compatible drives and install them yourself. Installation is very simple and takes 5 minutes. You only need a Phillips head screw driver to install the included mounting screws and the drives simply slide right in. It is recommended however that the drives be WD Red drives, but it will work with other models. Read/write speeds when connecting through 1-gigabit LAN are 115 MB/s for read and 76 MB/s write. Read/write speeds when connecting through 5GHz Wi-Fi are about 50 MB/s for read and 40 MB/s write. These read/write speeds maybe different for each person depending on network equipment and setup being used. This is a very good starter solution that is of good quality and good performance and is much more affordable than other expensive models.

Way above expectations. Fast, easy to install SATA drives, insanely easy setup. I bought this as an upgrade/replacement for a WD Mycloud Mirror (10yrs old), with a failing drive. I also purchased two new 14tb red pro drives. Popped the drives in according to the instructions, plugged it in and folllwed the 4 line instructions to get it up and running. As close to plug and play as is possible with this kind of setup. The OS 5 busybox linux installed, doesnt have the 16TB limitation of the My Cloud Mirror, so I was able to partition and present the full 28TB to my network. Took 4 days to transfer all the data from my old system, but it is 2-3x faster than the system it is replacing. I may actually buy another one to replace the old backup system that I use.

You can easily turn this into a 40 TB NAS by adding 2 x 20 TB drives. This thing is very reliable, easy to use and set up as well as being able to host all manner of servers and applets including Plex (which I use to stream my music collection because I'm old). The only downside to the WD cloud series NAS is their penchant for running fast fans every night when they decide to index the heck out of everything on the drives. There have been some times when it restarted b/c of overheating. Since then I've change where it sits (off the carpet and on a plane surface) and I put a 120 mm usb fan on top of it as a vent to keep moving air. Since then, it has been silent (or nearly). You can get USB fans for very little and use them on stuff like this or your desktop pc if they have a perforated roof on the case etc. I highly recommend them.

I added two WD 16Tb Drives to this NAS device and configured it with the RAID 1 profile. It works well for backup from other WD storage devices. I'm very pleased with it. Although it took a while to assemble, I saved a few dollars putting it together by myself and learned a bit about configuring such devices.

I had the little white 2TB WD MyCloud previous to purchasing this one. I should have never even bothered with it! The EX2 is quite an impressive unit. Boot up time is around 1 minute, UI is very similar to the WD MyCloud but incredibly faster and much more intuitive. I haven’t played around with too many of the features (there are many!) but I can already tell this is a great little NAS. Can’t beat the price for a 2-bay, but DO BUY PROPER NAS DRIVES! Failure rate of non-NAS drives in NAS enclosures are quite high. Save yourself the headache and potential data loss.

I am pretty happy with this purchase. I bought a diskless model because it was cheaper to buy 2 8TB hard drives separately rather than buying a 16TB model of this My Cloud EX2 Ultra. Setup was pretty easy and straight forward. I am using this to backup all my photos on my iPhone because I didn't want to spend $9.99 every month for 2TB iCloud service and also to use it as PLEX media sever. It does its job I originally intended to use it for and I'm very satisfied. I am still learning but I see a lot of potentials in this product.

The only issue I have had so far is that since it is cloud connected, everyone is trying to get into it. I do not have it accessible through the cloud and it is still being hit. I have an Orbi WIFI so it blocks the attempts, but is annoying.

I bought this without hard drives only because none of the models with drives were in stock. Made a separate purchase of two 4TB Western Digital Red drives and put them in Raid 1. I wanted redundancy for my purposes. Once the drive is online, it just works. Lots of options and plenty powerful enough for storage. Also has options to runs apps. Plex is a nice option, but this unit can't transcode a lot of formats so you may run into limitations there. I don't use the cloud services and was really interested in access outside my home. Works great for access from a MAC or windows. TimeMachine backup works great as well.

Concern over WD - My Cloud EX2 Ultra

I trusted WD. WD was the first HD I ever purchased. But after reading a security analysis of this product after its release was alarming to me. There were 87 reported security type bugs for this NW device. To me that was extremely irresponsible. Especially, this is a "consumer" type product and therefore intended for mostly NON-TECH users. SO BAD move by WD. I returned this and will scrutinize my purchases with greater intensity. One other issue related to this DEVICE concerns the TYPE of drives to utilize with this device. Know the difference between NAS Drives and on NON-Network drives. Also , the concern of SMR and CMR drives. I would by a bayless NAS and get the correct NAS drives. Read about the problems WD has had with their drives before you purchase any.

So I got this due to not being able to afford a Synology. I would have wanted to get a Synology drive over this. But for the money, I couldn't pass it up. I love it and it's not hard to use. there are some tweaks to the OS in it that I would have done but overall it's good. The one complaint is the fans run really high when you upload stuff for the first time due to indexing the files. Once they finish indexing then you are good. It only index's new files. If you have a lot of files to upload then it could be running and indexing and fans are loud for a day or 2 again depending on what size you're uploading. It worked me up during the night when I first got it and didn't know it at first till I googled it and that's what people were complaining about. But still like it. Have not used any apps on it yet. That's why I gave it 4 stars but still great and does what i need it to do.

This unit is very nice. Sturdy. Putting my own drives in it that I ordered was an easy process. I originally meant to order a MyBook Duo and not a NAS; my worry was that I HAD to have it hooked up to the cloud and not just my local network. Thankfully, there is a setting in it that disables a cloud connection to your device.
