Great drive for the price, especially when you catch it on sale. Snagged my 3TB Silver Ultra Metal for $89.22. The only cons I can think of is the cable that comes with it is ridiculously short, around 12 to 14" tops and the top speeds could be higher but can't really knock it considering it is ~5800(can't remember exact RMP but it's close to 5800) RPM drive and not 7200 due to the physical size of the drive itself. With a new Z170 chipset motherboard and a USB 3.0 port it tops out at ~128-132 MegaBytes a second on sequential read and write. The 4K random speeds are horrible of course, just like any other mechanical drive but I will give it 4 stars since it is a very affordable and extremely tiny and light weight external drive.

Fast and dependable backup. Easily ejected for protection from hackers. I use it to store backup copies of the operating system for both of my PC's. Little cost for big peace of mind.

The drive itself is great, I tested it on my other laptop and the read and write speeds were constant and fast. It was my fault for not looking at USB output power from the surfacebook.

This is a very aesthetically pleasing, relatively high-performance external hard drive with the option to use encryption, and makes for an excellent drive for additional storage, to keep backups of files, or to store clone images of your primary boot drive to. I would advise before purchase that you check out the support section for this drive on Western Digital's website to be aware of just what it can and can't do. I wanted to use it as a boot drive for a secondary OS, which the drive only supports under Mac OS X, not Windows. All is not lost, though. I suppose I could set up VMware Workstation Pro on the Windows host and store my guest virtual drive/OS images on the external drive in one partition, use another to clone my 1 TB host drive (this model is entitled to a free WD OEM Copy of Acronis True Image, but you have to go to the WD website and register to download it), and another for storage of sizable data (like my iTunes library) in order to create a decent sized paging file for the virtual machines on the host drive. Bottom line is that it IS an attractive external drive featuring both high performance and capacity and does everything that it advertises itself to do. I just had a specialized use in mind, and was somewhat disappointed to discover that this drive could not be implemented for this use, but that's where I should have done my research through WD's website beforehand. One other oddity, this drive comes formatted in the exFAT file system that I've only seen used on SDXC cards before and doesn't have the widest OS support once you leave the realm of Windows and OS X. I think a reformat to NTFS will probably provide more efficient operation as well as far greater OS compatibility. Despite it not directly meeting my needs, it's a solid, high-quality drive that I'll be keeping and would readily recommend to anyone in the market for a speedy high-capacity external hard drive, as long as you do your research and make sure it will serve your purposes well.
