This was just something that should not have ever been made. The book was too short to even consider a movie.

I saw this in the theater with my family, including my 62 year-old father and 11 year-old nephew. While not a direct adaptation of the book, Spike Jonze did a wonderful job at making a great film that can stand on its own. The story has evolved into, yes, something a little more adult, but it's not "Rated R" stuff. It's more about growing up and learning to take responsibility for yourself - adults will probably see the similarities between Max and Carol and the message it sends. This will probably go right over younger kids' heads, but it is still bizarre enough to keep them entertained. There is some violence, including one monster getting an arm ripped off. Otherwise, beautifully detailed and scenic, CG monsters are incredible, not the best movie you'll ever see but definitely worth picking up.

Brilliant...

This is a brilliant film. For those who love the children's book, you will be blown away by Spike Jonze's ingenious take on the story. It is dark, funny, very moving, and both adults and kids will be mesmerized. Visually stunning cinematography and special effects create the landscape beautifully and convincingly. Max Records, as Max, is one of the finest debut performances I have ever seen. He conveys a child's wild spirit basking the world his imagination has created. The film has been criticized for its darker content...This annoys me as it speaks to the denial adults and parents have about how children see the world. Children understand the darkness of this world as their limitless capacity for joy is only matched by their primal sense of fear. Children feel the threat of dangers both seen and unseen in a way adults have forgotten. Intelligent and powerful, this is the best film I have seen in some time.
The Blu-ray is a beautiful hi-def 1080p presentation. Filmed in a 1:1.85 aspect ratio, the colors are vibrant despite Jonze's muted pallette. Textures and facial (and fur) detail is rendered beautifully and vividly. There is evident crushed blacks, but these are the intention of the director so they do not distract. Fine film grain present throughout which only renders the film quality image more brilliantly. The sound is a lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1, which is surprisingly powerful. Every wave crash, creature movement, and snapping twigs are rendered in crystalline detail. Immersive ambient sound fills all the speakers and LFE is deep, robust, but never exaggerated. Dialogue is crystal clear. This is a fine Blu ray presentation worthy of the film.

Great movie for kids.

Overall a good movie for kids and the whole family. The characters that the kid meets on the island, are way out there, and can be scary at times, they all have some issues they are dealing with (not getting along with each other) and are fooled by the boys claim of being king of his people. The boy gets mixed up in their situations and starts to cause more problems instead of solving their problems. The creatures seem to have had no interaction with humans. As I said It can be hard to follow at times and the ending was to quick, expected more interaction and talking with the mother at the end. Yes, I know that the makers of the movie did not want that, it's there vision.

Wonderful Adventure!!

This movie was wonderful. It is true that watched in a certain way it is more of an adult movie. But at the same time you have to be a kid to appreciate it in other ways. The acting was wonderful. You couldn't get that from just any 9 year old. Max Records played "Max" flawlessly. By the way props to him for having an awesome name. The CGI effects where 100% seemless and believable. The book was perfectly expanded into a feature film with back story that fit perfectly along with the personality in the book. For those who think it is darker than the book, you are right. But you are wrong to take this as a bad thing. It is done this way because a kid wandering into a realm of immense wild creatures can't be anything other than scary. Otherwise they'd call it "Where The Happy Smiley Teddy Bears Are". I give this movie a 10/10 for all elements.

I loved it, but there are many people who hated it.
It's just one of those movies that you either hate or love, and there is not much room in between. (About a 50-50 split, from what I've seen.)
It's dark. And I'm not sure I would let little ones watch it.
I would guess 7 or 8 and up, but most children will get bored anyway.
(It wasn't made for kids.....)
Great film work, great characters, and a decent story line come together to create a great piece of artwork.
I was a bit turned off at first about the darkness of the movie.
But in worked in the end.
It's not your "normal" film.
But you will have to watch it to see what I mean.
This is a movie where you need to let your heart lead, not your head.
Sit back, relax, and enjoy thinking about your childhood.
Don't we all miss our childhood at times?

Where the Wild Things Are is a great movie for the whole family. It has a great cast and the cinematography is amazing, it really captures the essence of the beloved book. The BluRay release is also top notch with great video/audio quality. Highly recommended.

I got this movie for my kids! I found out later it would be too much for my 3 yr old! However, my son who is 10 loved it! I read the book to both of them a few time since I had my son and he has always loved the book!
Great movie!

A Great Adaptation

Where The Wild Things Are is classically a very shirt story about a young boys imagination and where he goes with it. This movie is loosely the same, but more so goes in-depth about a boy and where he goes with the stress in his life. I.E his parents breaking up and him not having anyone to look up to, have anyone look out for him. I really can't say enough good things about the camera work and beautiful atmosphere Spike Jones and his crew have created with this movie.

I had purchased this movie with my 3 year old son in mind as he loves the book. I viewed it to make sure that it would be appropriate for the intended audience. Unfortuantely there are quite a few scences that I thought where definantly inappropriate for a 3 year old. I think it may work for an older child who has a better grasp of right and wrong and what is hurtful.

Absolutely NOT a PG movie!

This was billed as a great children's movie so I bought it for 3 ,5 and 7 year old boys. I had to turn it off when the boy, dressed in animal pajamas, jumped on the kitchen counter and started screaming at his mother "Feed me! Feed Me!" while she was attempting to entertain a gentlemen friend. This is NOT a PG movie; it's a PG-13 at best, maybe an R.
I turned it off and threw the DVD in the trash -- the first time I've ever done that! I then spent the next several minutes comforting the children about it being a really bad movie.
Absolutely would NOT recommend this to anyone unless they were a psychology major and needed material on delinquent pre-teens.

It had a lot of emotion in it.... hard to follow especially for a kids movie. It could have been very cute considering the story line... but they tried to overdue the emotional part of it and it just ended up bad.
