Customers frequently mention the exceptional sleep tracking and reliable battery life as top features. The comfortable design and accurate data, particularly regarding heart rate and recovery, are also frequently praised. Fantastic Device to Inspire Better Workouts

The Whoop device is not a watch, and I didn’t want another watch. I wanted something that is 100% pointed toward helping me to improve my fitness. The sophisticated technology of this little wonder has provided me a fun and effective approach to improve my health. Simply stated, the focus is on tracking your Sleep, your Stress and finally your Recovery. My interest in the device is to improve my overall health. I finally joined a fitness club 10 months ago. I have improved, however my approach had little discipline. I don’t want a live fitness trainer, so I found this device. So far it is helping me to add more consistency and to achieve much better results – it helps motivate me to do more. This device combined with the Whoop App is a marvel. I am very happy with the progress that I am making and the help this device provides me in some magic way. It is helping me to not skip workout days and to do at least a little every day and more some days.
The device and the Whoop App are both very well designed. I installed the app on my cell phone and my phone found and paired to my Whoop 4.0 without a hitch. The app leads you through a setup to customize parameters for your Sleep time and Activities. I noticed the extensive array of sensors on the bottom of the device. I am an Electrical Engineer and the geek in me liked the fact there was not just a single little green dot for sensing. In fact, there are 5 LEDs and 4 photodiode sensors. There are sensors for heart rate, respiration rate, skin temperature, blood oxygen saturation, heart rate variability, and heart rate reserve. I did see studies and confirmed via experience the great accuracy of the Whoop device. Tip of the cap to the Whoop engineers. I did watch as I used a treadmill that the Activity Strain rose up as I increased pace and increased incline. My heart rate also went up. I noticed that the fitness club heartrate feedback matched the Whoop detected feedback – great.
The charger and watch are both waterproof. This is important so you can shower with the device or even shower with the device and the charger piggy-backed on it. Whoop engineers had a good idea to add capability to tap twice on the device or on the charger and an LED glows green so you know they are fully charged. The app also displays charge status. The design of the charger to slip over the device is genius I think so that you can charge the device while wearing it very easily. Here’s an important point: if you continue with your Whoop membership, when a new generation of Whoop hardware is released, you get it for free, that’s nice. The device also gets firmware updates loaded pretty quickly.
The user needs to take the time to look at all the capabilities of the device and to review your feedback every day. The Strain Coach will show you info to help you to not over or under exert. The Sleep Coach will provide feedback on how your sleep time is going and how much sleep you need. The deal is that sleep leads to recovery (which is also tracked) and recovery leads into your strain capability and optimizes your particular fitness approach. Be sure to let the app run in the background. If you close it, then it will need to sync data when you reopen the app instead of continuously, but it will catch up in any event. You’ll even get messages that Whoop is catching up on data which and it will, but it will take a few minutes.
I suggest to follow the recommendation to wear the device 24/7. It is very comfortable and I actually forgot I was wearing it. The Whoop engineers also hit the ergonomic design very well. The device is about 1” thick. Any more narrow or wider and I don’t think it would have been optimal. This design keeps the sensor arrays in contact and also spreads the pressure over a wider area without getting too large, so I think Whoop hit the sweet spot on size of the device/band. I wear it just above my wrist by about one inch. You can actually wear it on your upper arm if that is more convenient for you.
Activity type is identified magically by the Whoop device based on profiles that were developed for over 60 different exercises including just walking. Based on the sensor data, including how long you are working out; the device will calculate your Strain. This little device has a lot of smarts built in to help you. I have found that supplied knowledge of how productive a workout is, definitely leads to better workouts. It is really just that simple. Note you can also export data to your laptop for example and view an Excel spreadsheet including durations and other information. I use the data right in the app most of the time
Until I used this device my activities were sort of helter skelter and were not getting me to my goals. This device is not a toy but it is fun, and it is rich in technology both hardware and software. I attached a few actual screen shots from the app that helped me. Whoop also provides other coaching methods that you can take advantage of. This device offers many tips and charts that are important to help you improve. I highly recommend this little gem to help you focus your workouts and sleep time in a more efficient way.

Decent Choice In A Crowded Field

Decent choice in a crowded field...
First impressions, this has a nice quality feel. On opening box, you'll find the primary unit, battery pack, charging cable and basic ubiquitous documentation. Charging the unit is ultra-simple; just slide the battery pack on the head unit and that's that. Standard USB C cable to charge the battery pack. One cool feature is that both the unit AND the battery pack are water proof. I have spent hours in our pool and hot tub with booth just the unit AND the battery pack completely submerged and it was 100%.
Set-up was simple... DL the app, create your account, sign up and synch the unit. Simple. **IMPORTANT NOTE** The longer you use it, the more accurate and relevant info you'll get. When the offer first came in via the TIN program, they asked that we use it for 30 to 40 days prior to review. That makes complete sense given that it "learns" over time and tracks accordingly.
As far as what it tracks, pretty much activity, strain, recovery and sleep. In sleep mode it tracks your o2 saturation which is helpful, but I whished it allowed you to check o2 sat at your leisure. After 30+ days of use, I have not been able to see that it allows that. It also offers HR, temp, and in sleep mode, all of that in addition to HRV, resting HR and resp rate.
The unit does have auto-detect for activities. After 15 minutes of continuous activity, it detects and starts tracking. You can also do this manually, but I have found the auto detect to be accurate so rarely any need.
End of the day, it does what it does very well, but does it do enough? Very subjective question, but for me, I do wish it allowed you to check o2 sat levels on demand, offered daly o2 sat level's [not just while sleeping] and it oddly does not offer a daily step tracker. Seems like a pretty basic 101 feature but oddly absent. Also the expense... The hardware is "no-charge" with the subscription, but that subscription does get pricey, especially over time.
I will end where I began; It does what it does pretty well, but there are a few missing features and let's face it, there are LOTS of competitors that stand out in the field. That said, will I wear it while my subscription is active? Of course. Will I renew? Not sure yet.

It is true that nowadays our lifestyle often requires us to be awake more time causing not enough sleep or being in such demanding activities that we end up investing little time to exercise and keep fit.
Sometimes we can not keep track of our sleep hours or the exercise we do and having a device that does it for you is a great help.
With this health and fitness tracker you can keep a record of the exercise you do, whether you are a daily exerciser or just want to improve and boost your exercise or sleep habits. This device also monitors your vitals during sleep hours, presenting the next morning a report of the previous night that indicates how optimal and restful was the time you slept.
Within the app, metrics are displayed regarding how recovered you are, how many hours of sleep you need to recover optimally, making us understand our habits and how we can improve them.
We can see how many calories we burn daily, as well as our body's recovery percentage, our heart rate and if we need to exercise we can start monitoring the activity in the app. The activities can be scheduled if we have a specific time to workout.
The device has a design that seems to me very minimalist and elegant, plus you can buy different designs and color bands. The device is relatively small, it doesn't weigh much and over the days it sometimes becomes unnoticeable.
Regarding the performance of the device I have no problem but something that I personally find impractical is that the charger does not fully charge the device because it does not store enough energy, which results in that you have to charge the charger several times to have the device with the battery at 100%. I find this inconvenient considering that it is a device that is intended to be used 24/7.
I think this health and fitness tracker is designed more for those who perform constant physical activities, those who exercise and want to keep track of it allowing them to improve their health. Also if you want to monitor your vitals constantly and even more so at bedtime, this device is a great option without a doubt, since by giving you the necessary data you can make better decisions and plan your daily routine down to your sleeping hours.
In daily use there are some things that did not meet my expectations for example, the app disconnects or logs off at least once a week, causing the data that compiled the device at night or the day before, is not completed. No matter how much I keep the app open all the time, it always happens, like I said, at least once a week. One more thing is that the alarm works but not always. There have been some days that my phone is the one that wakes me up because the device does not activate the alarm. Since this happened, I only use my phone for when I want an alarm to wake me up in the mornings.
I also noticed that despite being a device that is only a tracker and has no other function, and despite being connected all the time via Bluetooth to the cell phone, it takes a while to synchronize the data with the phone and present the results or metrics.
The app shows relevant information, you can also synchronize this data with the iPhone Health app, something convenient that makes keeping track of our daily physical activities and vitals more complete.
In summary I can say that this device can be a great help for those who enjoy exercise, like to share their progress as the app has access to different groups nationwide and want to have control over their sleep habits, because personally I think that paying a membership is for those who want to commit. I think there are other options at a lower cost and without the need to pay a membership.

I’ve had smart wearable devices since they became mainstream over the last decade, but always felt they were gimmicky or lacked any real value outside of checking my immediate vitals. When I was offered the Whoop device, I immediately jumped at the chance to take a more data driven approach to tracking my overall health and activity throughout the day.
In the box, you’ll find the Whoop device with the attached band, a charging battery, and a charging cord. You’ll need to install the free app provided by WHOOP on your chosen App Store, and was happy to see they offered a free trial to give you time to understand the benefits of the device and the analytics behind them. Once the trial is over, there is a subscription charge you can pay annually, which I found to be reasonable. I should note, the trial (when I activated it) was for 1 year from the date of activation.
I was surprised to see just how simple the device was to size on to your wrist, and was equally impressed with how to charge the device. On the bottom (the part that touches your wrist), there is a sensor pad which is how the device monitors your vitals. You’ll need to make sure the app is open on your iPhone or Android device, as it reports back using bluetooth. Otherwise, you may miss out on syncing of data required to calibrate the device over the course of initial wear. It doesn’t need to be on the screen, and can be minimized or run in the background without issue.
Overall, the app is built well, didn’t crash once, was constantly communicating with the device when nearby, and even has additional features; such as setting an alarm that vibrates instead of hearing an audible tone from your phone. This was the first device I’ve used to track my sleep, as I’m sure many have tried using a smart watch, only for it to feel uncomfortable to wear all night. With the WHOOP band you almost forget you have it on. The charging battery is so light, that I often found myself going out with it still on, forgetting it was ever there. Battery life on the device lasts all day or more, during my use it was about a day and half, and the charger works quickly to charge the device. There is 1 LED light on the WHOOP to indicate battery life (green, amber, and red). Keep in mind, you will need to plug the battery charger in to power after every charge, as it really only holds enough charge for one full charging cycle.
The data provided by WHOOP is insightful when viewing the dashboards, allows you to share data with a competitive team or friends, tracks your activity throughout the day, allows you to start a workout, keep a daily journal, and my favorite: track your sleep. I found this allowed me to get a better sense of my sleep and recovery (or lack thereof initially). This was by far the most I’ve ever tracked my sleep, and found that it very accurately told me how long I was in bed, along with the time spent in REM sleep. I’ve even started paying attention to how active I am, providing you with an idea of the level of strain you’re under and does a good job of calculating how much time you need to recover. The health monitor in the app provides real time heart rate, and allows you to view the readings from the night before. This includes your respiratory rate, blood oxygen level, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and even your skin temperature. If you want to share this data, it even exports to a PDF and allows you to select your preferred sharing method or a cloud service to save it.
I honestly didn’t know I’d love this device as much as I do. I wear it all day, outside of taking a shower, it easily charges, it does a great job tracking your workouts, recovery, and sleep; even giving you tips of balancing strain and recovery based on your activity. I’ve found waking up with the vibration vs my phone is easier and less jarring every morning. The app does a good job providing you with tips throughout the day, and at the end of the month you’ll even get a summary of your overall activity, which I found was very detailed. I’ve benefited with living a more active lifestyle, getting better sleep, a better idea of how to recover from my workouts, and I get excited to see the dashboards in the app to track my progress. I can’t recommend this device enough to anyone looking to make a positive change to their daily activity.

For those who have not seen this device before, the device itself is just the band and and the “face” we will call it. To charge the device, you slide the moble battery pack over the face of the device and it charges wirelessly. Normally i wouldnt have gotten this device but being an employee allowed me to get one. When i took it out of the box, i followed the intrustion and installed the app and paired it with my watch. Worked and everything. Everything fine so far. But then my battery died on the device. So i followed the intrusctions and fully charged the battery pack and slid it onto the device. I have fully charged my battery pack 4 TIMES, AND NOTHING. Everytime i slid it on i get the blinking indicators that says my watch is below 5 percent, and the charge light keeps changing on the battery pack so unless electricty can vanish like my father did when i was born. This watch wont charge. As an employee, if a coustmer asked me for there reccomendation. I would say anything else.

Thank you for your review. We're sorry you did not have a great initial experience. We do recommend charging the battery pack completely before charging your WHOOP. If your battery does not appear to take a charge, plug the battery pack into a power source using a USB-C cable and ensure either a red or green LED is displayed. Note that it may take 1-2 seconds for the LED to turn on. If no red or green LED displays on the battery pack while plugged in, try a different USB adapter, cable, or power outlet. Sleep, Strain and Recovery, not a Pedometer

During my time wearing this device I have experienced an array of events. I can tell you that the day I lost my job was about as straining as a full body workout. I was able to see in more detail how I was sleeping that I could with my former smartwatch. Each morning I am able to assess how active I should be based on the level of recovery that was attained the night before. It has been nice to have the additional information at my fingertips each morning. I found an new love for sleep using this device, because I was then able to see a difference in how my sleeping was while having a commute to work job versus not having more freedom to get the required amount of sleep to gain recovery based on the strain levels for the day. I went from setting this to wake up based on a set time to waking me up based on receiving my 100% sleep need which I really have enjoyed. As a general consumer this is certainly nice detail and ability to have and personally I think this is definitely more suited for athletes who are training consistently and want to balance their strain and recovery for gains. Although I have enjoyed wearing it there have been a few negatives. The unit and charger are waterproof but the band will need to be dried off if you want to continue wearing it after getting it wet. Also, this unit is to be worn one inch from you wrist bone which on my petite wrist was a bit of an awkward spot. The simplicity of the design is very nice don't get me wrong but the lack of watch took me moment to get used to after wearing one for some time. One evening I actually wore both my watch and my Whoop side by side. Another unfortunate negative is that the charger is small and portable which is great, but if you are prone to losing things this will be easily lost so don't take it outside of the house unless it's necessary. The battery life is much better if you do no have an alarm set but overall I got a few days before I would want to charge it which was usually around 20-40%. Lastly, if the title wasn't clear, this will not track your steps. What you can do is track activities which is a long and detailed list, as someone with a varied workout I used "functional fitness" if you are looking for a similar option. I have really enjoyed using this and the subscription, it's useful and would be if you plan to focus on fitness and recovery goals.

THE BREAKDOWN:
The Whoop 4.0 is a fitness tracker is targeted at helping you optimize your exercise and recovery time. Some of the metrics that it tracks is your pulse, heart rate variability, blood oxygen levels, skin temperature and sleep data. Some of the sleep data that it tracks is the time spent in each sleep stage, efficiency (which is the amount of time you actually spend asleep) and your respiratory rate.
So, that you can understand the information, Whoop has turned your health data into three scores to represent your strain, sleep and recovery levels. The strain score is measured on a scale from zero to 21 and is calculated based on the amount of time you spend in an elevated heart rate zone. So, the more time you spend in an elevated heart rate zone the higher your score will be. The sleep and recovery scores are both based on 0% to 100% and as with the strain score the more you are rested and relaxed the higher your scores.
The band is a nylon and elastane band that is roughly 1 inch wide. I found that it was difficult to put on as the end of the band kept popping off. I would also get caught on long sleeve shirts and coats; this was very annoying. I felt as if the tracker was surprising comfortable. Whoop also comes with a detachable battery pack that you can just slide on top of the tracker when it gets low. In my use I found that I can wear the band for about 4 days before it needs charged. I also found that it takes around 2 hours to charge up.
The subscription cost to use the band is around $360 a year if you pay monthly, if you pay upfront then it will cost you $300. You can also choose a 2-year subscription that will cost you $480 up front. I think that the subscription model does make it more expensive in the long run than some of the other fitness tracker.
I really enjoyed getting some different insight into my fitness, sleep, and recovery. When my strain score would go up it kept me motivated. When my recovery score on the lower side I would take recovery on those days. I think Whoop does a good job at making it easy to see how everyday habits contribute to your overall wellbeing. It also has and internal app where you can journal your daily habits.
I think I got more and better sleep by wearing the Whoop 4.0. You can set a daily wake times in the app, you can also set it if you want to hit your “peak” and get all the sleep that was recommended. You could also set it to “perform” and get 85% of the recommended or you could set it to “get by” to get 70% of the sleep that is recommended. The Whoop calculates how much sleep you need based on your recent strain and sleep patterns.
The Whoop app is intuitive and very well laid out but felt like it was a little slow on the refresh. I usually close all the apps on my phone but found when I did it took a few minutes to refresh.
PRO’s:
- Comfortable to wear
- Easy to understand data
- Great recovery data
- Tracking isn’t limited to the wrist
CON’s:
-Expensive subscription
-Slow refresh on the app
SUMMARY:
Overall, this product worked as intended, and I would recommend this to a friend if they were in the market for a device like this.

The WHOOP is a great fitness tracker as it follows the company's philosophy of a no distractions tracker that focuses on the job at hand and that you do not have to take off, EVER. It is comfortable and durable and light which will make it easy to consistently wear it. I LOVE the charging mechanism, you dont really have to take it off ever.
There are a fun variety of bands for this to make it fit your style but I feel like the classic black is plenty good for most people. The app does a lot of the heavy lifting and the info can be overwhelming but there are introductory videos to easy you into what the data means

Setup:
The Whoop band is similar to other wrist-worn wearables in that it straps to your wrist and looks like a smart watch but without a screen to distract you. It doesn’t show the time, phone notifications, or summary data. In fact, it has just one small LED to indicate battery status and doesn’t even have a charging port. Instead of a cable and a USB adapter to plug into the strap directly, it comes with an external battery pack that you charge with a cable and adapter, and once that external battery is charged, just slide it on top of the strap to charge the strap wirelessly. It does add a bit of thickness and bulk for the 90 or so minutes needed to charge the strap, but this is a worthwhile tradeoff to not need to remove the strap (and loose data recording) for that 90 minutes. I’ve found that the extra bulk is barely noticeable unless you have long sleeves on.
This may sound cumbersome to have to charge the external battery and then use the charged battery to charge the strap, but this enables something that no other wearable can do - you can charge the strap while wearing it! Once the strap is charged up, just open up the app and it walks you through pairing the strap, setting up your Whoop user account, setting your goals and updating strap firmware if necessary.
The app has a TON of information that will start flowing in once you’ve worn the strap for a while, but at the beginning, just set up the basics and wear the strap continuously to let it record as much data as possible while you’re sleeping, working out or just going about your day.
The strap itself is comfortable to wear and stylish, too! The bands are interchangeable with many options available for purchase. Adjusting the band is super easy. Once you get the right fit, putting the band on or taking it off is as simple as lifting the clasp as the strap length is a set-it-and-forget-it kinda thing. There is no on or off button and nothing else to do with the strap - just wear it and occasionally slide the battery pack on to charge it back up.
Typical Use:
This is not a basic fitness wearable that merely gathers heart rate and step info. This is a serious health tracker that gathers tons on metrics and coalesces them into useful information. At the beginning of your Whoop journey, the info available will be mostly superficial and basic, but as you continue to wear it 24/7, it starts seeing trends and makes suggestions to better meet your fitness and recovery goals.
The Home screen is where you see the overview of your day; how much effort you’ve expending (Strain) and how well your body has bounced back from the effort you’ve put in (Recovery). Your HRV, calories burned, any manually or automatically detected activities, the status of the strap, etc…. it’s all there on a great summary view that takes into account the goals that you chose when setting up the account.
From there, you can dig in to the details on just about everything. You can see your sleep profile and all of the details for the last night or your trends so far. You can see the details for each activity you’ve logged and how it impacts your day. You can also see past days and overall trends. I’ve always been a light sleeper and never quite feel refreshed in the mornings. Whoop is helping me figure out what is causing this and how to fix it!
I’ve been using Whoop for over 30 days so the app has now “unlocked” additional coaching and performance assessments. I can see what days of the week I’m most active and how my prior sleep affects my readiness to take on the day. I can also get a better estimation of whether I should focus on effort or recovery for the day based on yesterday’s results.
The analytics should be super headful for anyone who is serious into training and fitness, but it’s also useful insight for those who want to maintain or improve their overall fitness. I’m not going to compete in any triathlons anytime soon, but I do hope to stay as healthy as possible while I gracefully age and Whoop is helping me do that.
I must admit to being a gadget junkie and right now I’m wearing a smart watch on my left wrist, a smart ring on my right hand, and the Whoop on my right wrist so I’ve got 3 devices all measuring all sorts of data. The Whoop is by far the most detailed and actionable.
Last week I went on a vacation where I didn’t have internet access for a week. Since the Whoop strap doesn’t have a screen, the Whoop app is needed to sync with and show information about the strap. While off-grid, the app lost my login and required me to log in again, but it couldn’t because I didn’t have ‘net access. Without the app, I needed to rely on the strap’s single LED to tell me when I needed to slide the charger on, and I couldn’t see any data. Once I got back online, it took quite a while for a week’s worth of strap data to catch up and sync to the app and the cloud, but it all worked fine. I just wish the app had either kept me logged in or at least allowed me to log in for local access until I returned online.
By the way, the tracker part of the strap can even be removed from the wristband and inserted in various articles of branded clothing like running shorts, etc. I’m not sure how the heart rate sensor would work if the strap isn’t on your wrist, but at least it’s an option for those who don’t like to wear a wrist strap.
Conclusion:
With detailed analytics and useful summary, coaching and performance assessments, the Whoop is a fitness tracker with better than average style and great detailed info. Aside from not being able to use the app without internet access, the Whoop meets all of my fitness tracking needs in a comfortable to wear and easy to clean wrist strap that you don’t even need to take off your wrist to charge.

Thank you for your review. Currently, the WHOOP 4.0 is able to hold up to 3 days of data without syncing to your mobile device. Once connected, it may take some time for the data to sync. For example, syncing 24 hours of data may take up to 1 hour. We're happy to hear that you're enjoying your WHOOP experience. Wearable for serious athletes

This wearable is made for athletes in training or anyone who works out frequently. It's basically tracking your sleep and your workouts and telling you if you had the optimal balance or not. If you're more of a couch potato looking for a step counter or how much you snore at night, this isn't the product for you. There are better wearables out there for things like that.
The WHOOP is comfortable to wear constantly. You can even charge it while you wear it so you can track yourself 24/7.
If you're an athlete with daily workouts, this product will certainly help take you to the next level. Otherwise it'll just make you feel bad about yourself.
The charger slides onto the wristband and looks and feels like a watch face. Instead of charging the wearable itself, you charge the charger then attach it to the wearable. This way you never have to take it off.
Another interesting feature is the daily diary. You can chart things that you did the day before to help analyze your data, such as caffeine and alcohol intake.

Thank you for your review. Thank you for specifically calling out the WHOOP journal. There’s a long list of journal options to choose from, spanning a variety of categories including:
Recovery (modalities like acupuncture, ice baths, massage, and stretching), Sleep (blue-light blocking glasses, sound machine, sharing a bed, etc), Nutrition (choices such as paleo, plant-based, or a late meal), Supplements (melatonin, turmeric, and more), Medications (including dosage and frequency), Lifestyle (things like working form home, alcohol consumption), Mental Health (anxiety, therapy sessions, journaling), and Reproductive Health (menstruating, pregnant, trying to conceive).
As you fill out your journal each day, WHOOP stores the information and gives you a summary within your Monthly Performance Assessments, which feature in-depth analysis of how the behaviors you record correlate to changes in your recovery. You’ll also see insights within the app noting the impact various things you track have on your sleep and other metrics.

I’ve been using the Whoop Band for a few months, and it’s been a game-changer. It’s not your typical fitness tracker; instead of focusing on steps, it tracks my recovery, sleep quality, and daily strain. The app gives super detailed insights, like heart rate variability and how well-rested I am, which helps me adjust workouts. It’s lightweight and comfortable to wear all the time, but it’s pricey with the monthly subscription. Also, no display or GPS, which some might miss. Still, if you’re serious about fitness and want to learn more about your body, it’s definitely worth it.

Packed With Data But Seems to Miss the Mark

With people wanting to be healthier, the health and fitness market keeps getting more entries into its space. The Whoop 4.0 is another fitness wearable in this arena. The Whoop 4.0 will certainly give you a lot of data to help you along the way. In training for a half marathon in January, I felt this would be a great device to help me get ready for that even. Unfortunately, I am not sure it helps as much as it tries.
To start, the way the Whoop system is set up, you basically buy the first 12-month subscription and get the device thrown in. This means before you can even use the device, you must put in your credit or debit card information. When the 12 months are over and if you haven’t canceled, you will be charged either monthly or annually again. It can just become another expense that comes out of your account without you even thinking about it. It is just something to be aware of.
The device itself took a little getting used to being worn. It is made to be worn about an inch above the wrist bone and snug enough that it won’t be loose. You need to get a good reading. I just found it to be tight and could get a little sweaty, especially on a hot day. I can’t say I never feel it on my wrist, but you can get to the point it doesn’t bother you as much.
As for the device itself, there is no display for you to look at. If fact the only visual feedback you can get is by double tapping the device to see what kind of battery life you have left. If you want to see any of the data the system logs, you must use your smartphone which it is paired with.
There is no GPS with the Whoop 4.0. There is no step counter. The system works in general by looking and getting information from other devices or by reading 5 key figures. The system looks at Respiration Rate, Blood-Oxygen Level, Resting Heart Rate, Heart Rate Variability, and Skin Temperature. From there, the Whoop system uses a series of algorithms to compute various other factors such as sleep time, sleep recovery, and activity strain. To go along with the algorithms, there are daily journal questions that you must answer to go along with the black box math to come up with the magic data it spits out.
There is a bigger than usual learning curve with the Whoop 4.0. You need to take time to understand what the data is, what it is telling you, and where it came from. Before you can even really get going with all the information, there is a calibration period with the device. You must go through 4 recovery periods. Basically, you must wear it all day and then sleep with it on to calculate a recovery. Once you are there, then you can see the data. The more you wear the device, the more it learns you and the more it can tell when there are variations to the norm. And the device does a great job of long-term trending. You can get graphs of data to print out or share with a health care professional. You can see if there are deviations which might suggest when you are getting sick. So, this part is nice.
The data I not sure though is as useful as it could be. For each parameter that is logged, you get a “green”, “yellow”, or “red” rating. Green means that your readings are in a good zone. Red means that there is a problem. Sounds great in general, but the data isn’t always accurate. Respiratory Rate does a pretty good job of measure this. It just counts how many times a minute you breath. And it does it constantly throughout the day to give you an accurate reading.
I really get frustrated though with Blood-Oxygen level. The “green” zone for this is anything about 90%. Mine is almost constantly at 95%. If you have had Covid-19, you probably are aware what Blood-Oxygen Level fluctuations mean and what zones are good. According to this device, 90% is still green. If I was truly at 90%, I would feel like I was at 15,000 feet without an oxygen mask. It is something to be aware of. Data may be relative to the device. It may call the reading the same thing. But it is not as accurate as other devices and should not be considered as completely accurate.
As far as heart rates go, the Resting Heart Rate is accurate. The Heart Rate Variability seems to be a little off. I have found that the device does not necessarily do a good job of detecting intermittent exertions from activities such as lifting weights. It also is slow to react to overall changes in heart rate. There is a lag to the measurement. I am not sure if this is the algorithm just trying to keep outlier data from creping in. Since you do not tell the device that you are starting an activity, it really relies on changes in heart rate to determine activity strain during the day.
The last parameter it measures is skin temperature. Again, this is not your body temperature. It is only the temperature reading from the skin. My normal body temperature runs lower than the 98.6 degrees we all think of. So, my body skin temperature will definitely be lower than that. So if I am below 96.7 degrees, this device says I am fine. Even with that said, I found skin temperature can vary greatly with these readings. I exercised on a hot day and got a sun burn. My skin temperature ran high that day. I went out and ran on a cold morning and my skin temperature was low. This didn’t reflect my overall body temperature, so I am not sure how to interpret what this data was really saying.
The algorithms seem to get confused at times as well. For example, the sleep may not reflect the activity correctly. One night I fell asleep early and logged 2.5 hours of sleep. The device recorded it fine. But after being up for an hour, I fell back asleep for 4 hours. The device did not record the sleep. I could go back and edit it, but why do I want to do that? The device should catch this. The device recommends a set amount of sleep that you get each night. These numbers are many times unrealistic. It will tell me on a Tuesday night that I need over 9 hours of sleep. With work, helping kids with homework, walking dogs, and the rest of life, there is no way that is going to happen. I know I need more sleep. I don’t need the device telling me this.
The device is interesting in that you can see a difference in sleep if you have had say caffeine before going to bed. I am not sure I need a device to tell me this though. It seems pretty obvious that it would have an effect. Also, there is an interesting stat that it says how many wake events you have during the night. I seem to average 1-2 per hour. Maybe that was always the case, but I do notice it more with the Whoop. Perhaps wearing a device to sleep causes me to wake more. It may be a case of Schrodinger’s Cat, but I can’t know without tracking my sleep without taking off the device.
Also, the device uses sleep to calculate some type of mythical recovery number. One day it said I recovered 29%. That morning I ran 7 miles and couldn’t have felt better throughout the day. The point is many times I listen to my body to tell me how well I am recovered. Some days I get great sleep, but I cut the workout short because it doesn’t feel right. Other times I can get a little sleep, but the workout just feels right.
As I stated, the device itself doesn’t track activities. It does a great job syncing up with many fitness apps to record running, weightlifting, swimming, or other activities. The Whoop won’t tell you how many miles you ran. It doesn’t care. It won’t give you a step count. It won’t give you lap times. It will tell you how many calories you burn. It will use all of this to calculate a strain rating for the day. Whether I run 3 miles or 8 miles, my day’s strain rating may be the same which doesn’t sound right. Then after running, I have a sweaty, fabric band on my arm that I can wear all day.
In the end, I really wanted the Whoop 4.0 to do some kind of magic. I wanted some great insight which wasn’t there. Most of the data that is here I can get from some other wearable without having to pay a subscription. With no GPS I can not even see how many miles I went. I can’t track my mile times. I need another device to do that. Mixed with the lack of display for feedback and misleading data, I was left wanting more. I wanted the Whoop 4.0 to be that everything device, and it turned out to be so much less. There are people that will find this useful, I am sure. I could recommend it to them as long as they understood all of the negatives. There is some useful data. But for me, give me how many miles I ran, how fast did I go, and just listening to my own body and I will be happy. And I don’t have to worry about the monthly subscription.
