Cabinets/Drawers finally got SMART with YALE Lock

Yale Smart Cabinet lock is designed to secure any cabinet or drawers in a smart home. Its mounted or installed inside the cabinet and can be used to lock, unlock, share access, and see history from your smartphone or voice (Siri). This is a great addition to lock the cabinets and secure anything inside and keep it out of hands from children to access medicines, valuables, cleaning supplies, tools. What’s in the box: Cabinet Lock, mounting brackets, 3M tape, CR2 battery, screws, double door bracket, instruction manual. Installation is simple. Download the Yale Access app from Appstore (iOS) or google play(android). It doesn’t work with August app, but all august locks are visible from Yale app once downloaded and logged in. You can use the same login of August if you already have account with august app. I do have 2 august locks and was able to use the same login credentials on Yale. It would have been easy to have this lock added there to avoid downloading and consolidating to one app. Once downloaded, just scan the QR code of the lock from the sticker on the backside. Once scanned, app guides through the process by playing a YouTube video from manufacturer for installing. Suggest watching fully for easy & quick installation. I was able to install everything in less than 10 minutes and was easy. This lock requires Yale connect for remote access but if you have apple TV you can enable apple HomeKit integration in the app for remote access. Keep in mind this lock is made of plastic and anyone with good force can open the cabinets if needed. So, not a great lock for valuables or for storing guns. Notifications works great and you can view the history to know when the door was locked and unlocked. You have options to enable smart alerts, auto lock timings in the lock settings. Smart alerts require the Yale connect. Pros: Smart Bluetooth lock, Smart Integration with SIRI through apple tv for remote access, Auto lock, Share & Monitor access Cons: Unstable Bluetooth connection. Works great with WI-FI through apple tv or connect integrations. Overall, great addition to any smart home that needs to secure cabinets or drawers. Works with double door cabinet for me. I will be replacing the plastic double door hardware with steel plate for added security. With few modifications, this may be a good smart lock to start with.

To preface, I already have a front door lock from this same company, which has been an ease to use. That being said, the cabinet locks are really following suite as well. When I initially was about to mount this lock I was concerned that I would need to drill into the cabinet, I was wrong, I took the adhesive route and was happy I did so as any sort of screw would have pierced through the bottom of the cabinet. This device adds seamlessly to the existing companion app that I use to manage my front door lock, adding the device was super easy. The bridge that connects the device to the cloud does need to be somewhat near the device, so keep that in mind as I had initially placed the cabinet lock just slightly out of range. Additional bridges are sold separately. Opening and closing being app drive is a good thing and a bad thing; if internet drops then opening the needed cabinet is delayed, but being able to open remotely is a nice touch. I used this on my tool cabinet that has sharp objects in it, knives and other tools that my young child should not be playing with and so far it was worked amazingly. All in all, if you are looking to secure a cabinet while being able to toggle functionality in a remote fashion then this cabinet lock is for you.

This is my second Yale smart home lock device and like the first, this is a good choice if you have need. Inside the box you'll find the master lock, several mounting options, instructions and a handy template for set up. After loading the app, install was simple (especially with the template) and was completed in just a few minutes. After setting template, I was probably 4 minutes to fully installed and ready to associate with the app... And here is where the only minor issue occurred. On set-up in the app, it asked me to scan the QR code. OK, no problem, except it kept telling me the S/N was not a valid SN. After several tries, I tried to set it manually and same deal, it said it was an invalid SN. I tried to call the 24/7 Tech Support number and after probably 5 to 7 minutes of listening to the music and being told an engineer would grab my call, I decided to skip this step. I hung up, chose "Skip This Step" in the app and I was up and running. Important note, this lock is not necessarily a "strong" deterrent... It's more akin to a strong child lock. Good to be placed in medicine cabinet or where dangerous household chemicals are store. Please do not take this comment as a negative, but just a qualifier. End of the day, I would recommend to a friend who had need. **PLEASE NOTE** This product was provided to me at no or reduced cost in honest for an unbiased and honest review. This review is exactly that, honest and unbiased.

I decided to try this lock out as it seems pretty cool to be able to use your phone to lock/unlock my cabinet. I really enjoy how they provided all the installation items and detailed instructions. Its a nice well made sturdy lock used for small areas you wish to keep safe. The installation and setup of the Yale App was very easy to setup and has a lot of customization. I like how there is an Auto-Lock Feature you can set time limits along with door ajar noise maker for long periods of being open. I also like how you can setup guest access for family members so they could unlock as well when needed. Overall I really like this product and recommend to try this out.

A good option for a standard cabinet!

There are plenty of products that offer a variety of lock options, but often require the purchase of a new lockbox, having to remember a combination, or know where you put the key. There are also many who have important medications, which can be within reach of small children, and you’d like some peace of mind with keeping them secured when you’re not watching. Yale has released the Smart Cabinet Lock which provides you with a solution to lock up a cabinet using your iPhone or Android device with the Yale Access App installed. In the box you’ll find the smart lock, a CR2 battery, 3M mount tape, additional hardware for mounting and installation, a couple of short and one longer lock arm, and should include mount template for a standard install (note: mine was not included for some reason). Installation can be easy, if you use the template, have a standard flush cabinet door, and a shelf for the device to adhere to. The instructions also warn you that installing and causing damage to the device may void your warranty; so, be patient while installing. The smart lock is about the size of a small USB phone charger, making this a good option for most installations in a standard medicine cabinet found in many homes. I wouldn’t recommend using this on a shelf that shifts position easily, or pulls out, as this could lead to misalignment of the lock arm, and/or failure to properly secure the door. Using in a drawer might be a bit tricky, as you’ll need to find the best way to mount the device. The lock arms have small magnets, which are used to detect its position into the device, and trigger the lock. You can have the device auto lock, or require you engaging the lock in the app or with the use of a keypad accessory (sold separately) if you don’t want this feature enabled. I initially planned on installing this in a medicine cabinet, but with the mount template not being included with my device, I opted to install this in a different cabinet. If you’re installing this with the need to use the longer arm you may find the installation process takes a bit longer, and may frustrate some users in the process. Without a mount template, you’ll need to eyeball the device position and use the adhesion of the lock arm to find the right mount location. This took me about 10 minutes to get the location right, and I made sure not to fully adhere the device until I knew it was correctly placed. The installation manual gives you some measurements to try and keep the device within an optimal mount area. Once positioned, you can also use the included screws to further secure the device and lock arm in place. The lock uses Bluetooth to perform the installation in the app and update the device. The App does require that you scan a QR code which is located on the back of the device (along with the HomeKit QR code) in order to identify it during setup. I would highly recommend you launch the app and scan the code before you begin installation, and will display a YouTube video with some basic installation steps, making the final installation easier. If you forget to scan the QR code, you’ll need to remove the device from the mount plate or reach around the back of the device to scan it. If you don’t want to scan the QR code, or have issues with accessibility to remove it, the app will allow you to use the Serial Number which can be found on the bottom of the box. If you have an existing August Smart Lock, you’ll be happy to see the Yale Access app uses the same login, and functions in a familiar way. The device will pair with a Yale Connect for remote access using your Wireless Network connection, and can also be used with a Yale Keypad to allow for use with unlocking/locking without your phone. Please keep in mind, if you already have an existing smart lock using a Connect, you can’t pair more than one lock to it. So, you’ll need to purchase another Connect in order to enable to remote monitoring and lock operation if you’re not nearby. I was able to easily engage the lock with the app from about 10-15 feet away, which would allow for easy access if the smart lock isn’t right next to you. If you've set this up with a Yale Connect, you'll be able to perform functions with Alexa or with Google Home assistant products. Setting the device up with HomeKit was relatively easy, just follow the steps in the app and it helps complete the setup. So, what happens if the battery dies or someone gets locked inside a cabinet? Once the battery is low, the app will provide you a notification to change it out, and will simply unlock the device before it completely discharges. It also has a small button on the top of the device, which can be used to unlock the device, should you or a child be locked inside a cabinet accidentally. You’ll notice an LED light on the button on top when it’s unlocked and locked and can be pressed to immediately unlock the device. Whether or not you use the lock frequently, using low energy Bluetooth should keep the battery lasting for some time before needing to be changed. The risk of not changing the battery, is having your cabinet door, or drawer, unsecured until you can replace the battery. This also limits the risk of someone being locked inside a cabinet when the battery discharges. With some applied pressure, you can also pry the lock open, although you’ll likely break the lock arm in the process. There is an extra short arm, if you have the need to pry it open. Overall, the device functions well, it updated relatively quickly, and works best in a standard cabinet configuration. Installation can be a bit tricky if you’re installing this in a drawer or need to mount this in a way that isn’t similar to a standard cabinet that can use the included mount template. You do risk voiding the warranty if you damage the lock arm or device due to a bad installation, so I’d advise you be patient during install. The Yale Access app is easy to use, and setting up the device was fairly painless if you scan the QR code before fully installing. Keep in mind, you’ll need an additional Yale Connect for remote access as this won’t work with an already paired Connect being used by another lock device (unless you reset it), but isn’t required if you’re not worried about remote access.

Great smart lock for light security

First impression: My first impression of the Yale Bluetooth smart cabinet lock is that it is a well-built, cabinet lock. It comes with a battery, installation guide, mounting hardware, both standard and long lock posts, and a double door plate. App: The app is used to setup the Yale account, set up the lock, and use the lock. Setting up the user account with this app was much easier than on most. I don’t like using apps to set up accounts because a lot of times it doesn’t work. The Yale app user setup worked beautifully. Setting up the lock was also quick and flawless. You scan the QR code on the back of the lock, add a name and location, and it’s done. Following the setup, the app automatically updated the firmware and was ready to go. The app is super simple. You can add a user, view a history of access, and change the name/location. That’s it. There is a large circle that is either green or red. Push the circle to lock or unlock the Yale. The simplicity of this app is actually refreshing. Installation: The installation of this lock was quite simple. Using a template for the body and 2-sided tape for the lock post, you can align the two without any trouble. You can leave it with the 2-sided tape, but if you want the lock to actually be a lock, you need to secure both with the supplied wood screws. Performance: The lock works great. When you tell it to lock, it locks and the app circle turns red. When you tell it to unlock, it unlocks, and the circle turns green. That’s it, it is really that simple. There is an unlock button on top of the lock body, but I’m not sure how or why you would use it as the cabinet would be locked if you needed to use it. Conclusion: This is a very nice lock. It is small and easy to install. The setup is easy with the app, and the app is fast and simple. The only thing I would say is this lock is a great lock to keep children out of a cabinet you don’t want them in, or to deter someone from getting into the cabinet. But because it is all plastic, I would not consider it a lock to protect valuables or medications. A strong person could most likely break it with enough force because it is plastic. I don’t believe it was intended to be a lock to protect valuables. It is a $79.00 lock and I think it is an excellent lock if used as it is intended. I recommend this lock!

Good but Not for Heavy Duty Use

Before anything, you should watch the video on how to set it up because that will you save you a lot of time. Otherwise, what it would take minutes to setup could become very frustrating hours. Easy but not as intuitive as one would expect. So, watch the video and don’t trust the written instructions, which is poorly written in my opinion. For what it is designed, it works well. It locks nicely and can be controlled with your phone. As we age, we tend to forget things more quickly. Yes, I’m talking about myself as I’ve noticed that I forget to put things back in place ten seconds after I look away, especially when I must keep an eye on my pre-teen trying to set the house on fire; figuratively but no less frightening. No worries here because this Yale Smart Cabinet auto locks. Now, this is not designed to prevent burglary as it wouldn’t be that difficult to crack it open with a hammer or another tool since it is made of plastic. It is mostly designed to keep meds or other stuff from kids and prying eyes. If you expect more than that from this product, don’t waste your money on it. Otherwise, you will find that it is useful and fits a smart home perfectlly. My hope is that it will last a long time. When Yale releases one that is more solid and makes me feel it won’t be broken easily, I will certainly order one. For now, this will do. I’m giving it four stars because I had lowered my expectations even before trying it and it worked better than expected. I still wish for a heavy duty one and one. Note to Yale: please rewrite the instructions as some people may not watch the video before trying to set it up.

This product is absolutely amazing if you have small children or want to prevent anyone from accessing cabinets. Set up was seamless and it works as advertised. I actually just ordered 4 more cabinet locks to "smart lock" my kitchen cabinets and medicine cabinet. Installation was also extremely easy and the instructions outlined everything. The only con I have is the cost of these are expensive compared to regular cabinet magnetic locks that work with magnetic keys. The major benefit of course is those keys are easy to lose. With the Yale lock you just use your phone and problem solved.

Decent Lock but Install is a Nightmare

The Yale Smart Cabinet Lock is a weird one for this review. I personally had major issues with it working as the Bluetooth would not be found easily at first coming to find out the batteries were bad in the unit, not dead, but bad, and had to buy more. Once that was fixed, we started the install and still would have the app, which needs polishing, would drop the Bluetooth for no reason over and over. After a few calls to the customer service department at Yale, they had me uninstall/re-install the app and reset the lock. This fixed the issues and I was finally able to get the lock working. Now, the lock is working, time to see what it does. Well, not much other than unlock when in Bluetooth range. This is great for the medicine cabinet or your cleaning supplies. Really, there is no other use for it than that as after about a day of the kids asking to get in their snack drawer, I was tired of running back and forth to unlock the drawer. I moved it to the bathroom for our medicine cabinet and I am leaving it there. I highly recommend getting the Yale wifi access point to get more full use out of seeing what is going on besides lock and unlock and having that remote ability to unlock. Neat idea and has potential but after the initial problems with the batteries and limited function, make sure it is a lock you want to have to get up and have your phone to unlock or buy the wifi optional equipment for full functionality.

If you need to lock a cabinet door and control access, the Yale Smart Cabinet Lock is definitely worth a look. This device comes in a modest box with everything needed for a quick and easy installation. There are multiple lock posts, including one with twice the length as the standard post. There is also a template and 3M tape included to help with proper installation. The installation process was very straightforward and can be done in minutes. The device is made of very sturdy plastic and should withstand some level of forcible entry. Once installed, you must download the Yale Access app for your smart phone. One nice to have would be to have an app for PC. The app will guide you through account setup and adding the device. The app also checks for firmware updates (yes, an update was installed immediately). Overall, I felt the setup process was par for the course and easy to follow. I have an Android device, and I had absolutely no problems getting the Smart Cabinet Lock up and running. The app provides a significant amount of functionality for the lock. You can, of course, lock and unlock the device, provide access to others, set up alerts, set auto lock features/timing, and review activity logs. This is very useful in a case where there is a cabinet with shared supplies or something along those lines. The control and data the app provides really opened up the functional possibilities for the cabinet lock, in my opinion. The app performed without a hitch, each bit of functionality performing as expected. This is an easy decision if your use case fits. The Yale Smart Cabinet Lock is a sure bet.

A great option to add a layer of security to your cabinet without doing any complicated installation of a traditional key lock. In very little time, I transformed a double-door cabinet into a fully secured cabinet. First, by downloading the Yale access app, creating an account for my house, and scanning the q-code from the back of your locker in no time your locker connection is established. After a couple of tests, unlocking the lock before installing it, I am ready for installing it in the cabinet. The lock is powered by a CR2 battery included in the package. The kit includes all the hardware, screws, some stickers to fix the locker, and the template to properly fix the locker inside of the cabinet. The right placement seems the only element to guarantee the success of proper locking function and the addition of the template is a nice detail. There is also available a video that can be watched before installation that complements the process. Because I installed the lock in a double door cabinet, I used (also included) the plate for double doors. Once installed, the door automatically closes and the unlocking is done with the click directly in the app. The app has color-coded the status of the lock-in case you question it: red for close, green for open. I shared the app with other finally members and the history of opening closes is recorded in the app. A safe, easy-to-install lock that transforms any cabinet into a digitally controlled secure cabinet.

Great Solution as a Basic Deterrent and Tracker

The Yale - Smart Cabinet Lock with Bluetooth is a great solution for specific needs. As has been noted by others, the primary use scenario for this lock would be for keeping medicine secure from children. Young children would not be able to open the cabinet - and teens would be deterred by the fact that you have a record of if, and when, it was opened. If you add the Yale Connect option (not included with this version), you would be notified as soon as the cabinet has been opened. I should add that this would also be helpful for those caring for their elderly loved ones. I wish I'd had it when we were caring for my parents and they were at the stage when they could no longer remember whether or not they had taken their meds. We needed to monitor their doses and make sure they could not locate where the meds were kept. This would have provided a perfect solution. As for set-up, it's very easy to work with the app and get it connected. The physical install will largely depend upon the particulars of your cabinet door and hinge. The fact that it comes with a few modifying options for installation was very helpful. Other than the caveat that this is more of a deterrent than an unbreakable physical barrier, this is a great solution for a specific need.

The Yale Smart Cabinet Lock is a solid Bluetooth locking solution for lightweight doors. It isn't affordable to the masses, but it solves a problem either permanently or temporarily with a choice of tape or screws. It connects through HomeKit or just Bluetooth using the Yale Access app (iOS & Android). This kit is mostly built of plastic externals and EVERYTHING important to secure the lock is plastic. It includes everything to make the install easy to include stick-on templates to line things up perfectly each time. I cannot complain about the installation process. SUPER EASY for me and should be for you too. The only thing I worry about is how long the plastic for the latch and lock will last before it gets brittle and is easy to break. After pulling the door, this can withstand a strong tug. It's not going to stop a thief, but it will stop children and anyone with a little common sense. Another concern I have is how will it be to get replacement parts for this.

This is a great little device to lock up a cabinet, it won’t stop anybody that really wants to get into it, but if you screw it down you’ll know for sure that someone got into the cabinet. I do love the idea of it being smart and to be able to never lose the key, however I wouldn’t recommend putting this on a cabinet that you want to get into all of the time as it is a little annoying to get your phone out constantly to unlock your nightstand (say if you wanted to keep something in there that you don’t want the kids to find). You can turn off the auto lock but then you have to remember to lock it. One fix is to set the auto-lock to delay up to 30 min, this should solve the needing a phone every two seconds and then you only need to lock it when you are done using it if you are worried about people getting into it instantly. Speaking of app settings, it has the option to fail open or not, now if you set it not to fail open make sure you have a secondary entrance or keep an eye on the battery as you might have to bust your drawer to get into it if you let the battery die. You can always choose to have it fail open and that is probably the better option for most people. The box says it is compatible with apple home kit but that I can’t really review that part as I have Smartthings, Alexa, and Google Home… All of which have the correct app but none of which this lock is compatible with sadly (I tested). I feel like they missed several opportunities with this seeing it is smart. First, integration with more than just one home systems seems like a pretty basic thing to miss, second with only an app available for most people, WearOS (especially since Samsung switched now) seems like a pretty easy win. A widget on my smartwatch to open the lock would be pretty awesome or maybe even better some NFC integration to just tap my watch to the side of the dresser. Installing it is simple on a solid piece of furniture and unless you are protecting against toddlers I would suggest using the screws, I would also highly encourage watching the YouTube video as that has some key pieces of info that make the install go smoother. If you are trying to install it on a plush fabric covered cabinet… good luck, it takes a bit of trial and error, especially as if you have a gap in the drawer it is a piece of cake to stick a wire in the crack and push the button on the device to lock and unlock it. Overall, if you are trying to protect something that you don’t want little kids (like the cleaning cabinet) or older kids that probably won’t bust furniture to get into something (liquor or medicine cabinet), you don’t have to get into it constantly, and you have apple home kit or no smart home kit, this is an awesome device.

PRE-REVIEW-NOTE: I am willing to accept that I may have received a defective unit, however as the review timeframe opened up (had to be done by) the weekend, I am somewhat obligated to submit the review as-is now. While initially I was hoping for better installation documentation, a little looking at the device and it was obvious how to proceed and my desk drawer (where I might store medicine or private documents) seemed like the perfect place for this. I thought it would be useful because some younger family members also sometimes spend time alone in my room (without me being here), it seemed important to start securing prescription drugs and such. The installation was two screws to secure the mounting bracket at the top of the drawer inside, put in the battery and pair in the app, then slide in the lock itself. Afterwards insert the 'tab', put a sticky on back of the tab, close the drawer and push it so it sticks to proper place on drawer, unlock it with app, open the drawer, and with two screws secure the tab in place on sliding part of drawer. Works pretty good, at first. Often. it failed to communicate, but it sometimes offered a quick repair option (over Bluetooth). Ther was a rather fundamental problem. At evening when i needed meds, I found myself locked out. I don't know if the app malfunctioned, was having server issues, or something was interfering with bluetooth, or who knows what. This could be dangerous for some, and in my case if I abruptly stop my medication without titrating off it could be disastrous. Fortunately, i eventually ripped the lock off with a little muscle, so i am fine (props to my bob's discount furniture marble desk for having low quality wood which made it easy to pull the screws out of.). I would not recommend this.

This is my second Yale Smart Lock, and first for a cabinet. We have used other child proof cabinet locks in the past and I thoroughly enjoy having a smart lock to secure my cabinets. I am using this one to secure the cleaning supplies under our kitchen sink. I really enjoy not having to use a combination or pin to unlock it, and with the traditional cabinet locks we are always misplacing the magnetic key. Finally a Smart way to lock cabinets. Inside the box you get everything you need to install it on your cabinets. You get the Lock, Battery, 3M mounting strips, scres, double door bracket, and a manual. You will want to download the companion app to your smartphone, it is available in both iOS and Android. Our other lock uses the August app, this one used the Yale Access App. The app will guide you through the setup process, scan and go. Easy instructions to follow. I appreciate the notifications I receive when the lock is enabled and disabled.
