A: Hi Co_Dad, Yes. This lens will be able to zoom on your subject very well which is good for sports. Since the amount of light will be limited on indoor sports, to avoid blurry picture you just need to set the ISO to a higher value to compensate with a faster shutter speed. -Anthony

Q: Is this lens auto-focus or manual?
A: I’m certainly not an expert photographer, so my answer is in layman’s terms. I use this lens often for capturing my child at gymnastic meets, where I can’t get physically close to the action. My answer to your question is both. This lens itself does not have manual/auto focus switch, like some others do. The amount of zoom is manual as you frame your shot. The lens then works with the (Sony) camera’s auto-focus capability when the shot button is pressed halfway down.

Greater starter lens, I’ve shot over 100k sports photos with this lens and it’s still going. Not great in low light but I feel its value is worth the boat for a relatively “cheaper” lens.

The Sony E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS is one of a familiar breed of lenses: an entry-level telephoto zoom lens designed to be paired with the standard 18-55mm kit zoom. On the plus side, this lens has enough reach for sports and wildlife photography, and includes helpful optical image stabilization (that's the OSS) that can help prevent blur from hand-shake at longer focal lengths.
