Perfect for Our Master Bedroom

This is a perfectly sized system for our master bedroom. It was very easy to set up and mount to the wall underneath the TV and sounds WAY BETTER than the internal TV speakers. The downloadable app allows you to control it from your phone or tablet or you may use the included remote. Also, if you have an HDMI (ARC) connection on your TV you can simply connect it via that with just one HDMI cable and then you’ll be able to use your TV remote to turn the unit on/off as well. The sound is very good although it doesn’t hold a candle to our main AV system in our Family room. Having Alexa built in is awesome too; it has replaced my alarm clock. The system is also equipped with Bluetooth so you can stream music or podcasts from your mobile device very easily. The wireless subwoofer sounds good when playing movies and so far the connection has been flawless.
For a clean-looking, good-sounding system for the bedroom at this price point, you’re not likely to find anything that beats this one at the moment.

I've used a lot of soundbars over the years with both wired and wireless subs. Each of them has had it's quirks and left much to be desired. When I had the opportunity to get my hands on this yamaha soundbar I couldn't wait. Yamaha is one of the oldest names in the game when it comes to high end home audio equipment. So how did they do? They nailed it.
This bar is built like a beast; solid, heavy, and very durable feeling. Ditto for the sub. Setup is a breeze. Plug the ac cables into the bar and the sub, plug your arc cable from tv into soundbar and you're off and running. Out of the box the sound is very good, but you can make fine adjustments using the remote. Unfortunately the led lights on the soundbar that indicate volume level and other setting changes don't give you much in the way of information, so you're going to need to use the app ... speaking of
The app is mandatory. If you don't have a smartphone or tablet by now, don't buy this bar without one. The app is absolutely necessary for updating firmware and knowing exactly what settings you're changing on the soundbar. The app quickly found and paired the soundbar and updating was smooth and fast - no problems whatsoever.
In the app you'll find options to rename your soundbar, link the built-in alexa to your amazon account, as well as more sound settings. In order you have 3d surround, Sound Program (EQ settings), Clear Voice, Bass Extension, and your independant subwoofer volume. On the main menu you can control the volume of the whole system.
3d surround provides a faux 3D effect, it's kind of gimmicky and I don't really care for it but it does give you more of a room filling experience. Your personal taste will of course vary, but it's not for me.
Sound Program is what Yamaha calls their equalizer, I don't know why they didn't just call it EQ but whatever. You can select from 6 presets; Movie, Music, Sports, Game, TV Program, and Stereo. They all sound a bit different, but they're so similar that you're preference will be entirely subjective. The movie setting seems to offer the most balanced sound so that's where I keep it. I don't know why there isn't a custom setting where you can modify the sound to your exact preferences, seems like a huge omission. Maybe it'll come in a future firmware update? Yamaha if you're paying attention, please give me custom EQ. That said I'm very happy with the sound in Movie mode. Highs are clear and crisp, mids are present but not overwhelming or washed out, and bass is very punchy without any distortion even at higher volume levels. Without exaggeration I can say that this is the best sound I've heard from a soundbar, besting even two high end ATMOS bars I've used that cost well over 2k. Very good job from Yamaha.
Clear Voice accentuates "voices" or really the frequencies that human voices tend to fall into. I've heard this on soundbars and tv sets for years and never been overly impressed, but the Yamaha bar does an amazing job of bringing voices - and only voices - to the front of the soundscape. It doesn't feel phony or overprocessed, the voices of actors in movies and tv shows and vocals in music come across very clean. There's definitely some magic going on behind the scenes here that I haven't heard before. I keep this on all the time, and if you knew me you'd know that I never use any post-processing effects in AV equipment. And yet here I am. It's just so good and natural sounding, I don't know what to say. Again you may or may not like it, but I happen to love it.
Bass Extension ostensibly is there to provide a richer fuller bass if the massive subwoofer isn't bumping hard enough for you, but I found the performance to be very inconsistent. In some movies and tv shows it seems to offer a wider sound field while in others it seemed to actually mute the thump of punches landing or explosions booming. In music it's the same story, at times yielding a window-rattling thump and at others completely muting the bass line in the song. This one is most definitely staying off for me.
Lastly we have the subwoofer volume - so let's talk about the sub. It's big. It's heavy. It's awesome. Stock settings are certainly adequate with this subwoofer, but I like to increase the volume to +3. Any higher and it's honestly just too much bass for me, still very clean and precise just ... too much. The bass provided here should surpass all but the most hardcore bass-head's expectations. It's simply put, very very good. And another thing! A common problem with wireless subwoofers, every one I've used up until now, is that they routinely lose connection to the soundbar. Sometimes briefly sometimes for awhile, but it's always jarring when it happens. I've watched several movies and more episodes of TV than I'd care to admit with this Yamaha soundbar already and I have not experienced a single drop. Not once out of more than 40 hours of play time. It's unheard of. Even my high end ATMOS soundbar's sub cuts out when the bass on a soundtrack fades out, taking a second to kick back in. It's something you quickly grow accustomed to but now that I have a system with a wireless sub that works flawlessly I hate watching TV in my other rooms. In other words, this thing is perfect.
Lastly I want to talk about the remote. It's a perfectly functional remote, but without any sort of visible readout on the soundbar itself the remote is kind of pointless. You'll need the app to know exactly what the settings are, and since you can change them far more quickly and easily on the app the remote just sits in a drawer not getting used. The remote, strangely, uses one of those flat watch type batteries, which means when it runs out of juice you're likely going to have to run to the drug store as chances are you don't have any of these lying around the house. I don't really get why Yamaha went with this battery as opposed to triple or double As, but it's a minor annoyance. There's also a button on the remote for swapping between different audio codecs which is crazy. Does everyone know what audio codec (DTS, dolby true HD whatever) the movie/tv soundtrack is using when they play back? No of course not. On every other device the system just takes whatever source it's fed and processes it correctly. This soundbar does the same thing. So why is that button there? It's very confusing, and even more confusing when you realize that this option isn't even available in the app. It's almost like this remote is a pre-existing design that they just tossed in the box as an afterthought. Don't use it, just stick with the app. It's far more convenient and feature rich.
So overall this soundbar gets 10 out of 10 for me. I wish I could rate it higher. It's class-leading at it's price point, and although it doesn't feature ATMOS support but I've found it produces higher quality sound than systems that are 3 or 4 times the price. The remote is pretty much garbage, but I've never used it outside of checking to see if the buttons work. I really wish there was a way to set custom EQ but I'm not going to knock off a star for that. The performance of this system is just too good. Yamaha have a long tradition of making industry-leading speakers and receivers. They're carrying on that tradition with this soundbar, which is hands-down the best soundbar I've ever used. It's worth your hard-earned coin. Buy it.

Very nice 2.1 sound-bar with a wireless subwoofer. It is compact and good looking and comes in around 36In x 3In. Ther wireless subwoofer can be put anywhere and is about 17In X 17In X 7Inand only requires a power connection. The soundbar has a power, ethernet, HDMI in and HDMI out (ARC) and an optical connector for TV’s that don’t support ARC. There is also a USB jack for doing firmware updates, but if you connect the unit to the internet it will do updates with the ethernet port. The iR receiver and remote have a 20 ft range with a 30Degree off-center angle. The remote is small and compact and comes with batteries.
The unit produces great sound, and the subwoofer will add the lows. The remote has a +/- setting for the subwoofer as well as Power, volume, inputs, sound mode, and an Alexa button. You really need to install the app to take advantage of the features of this unit. It will work on your phone or tablet.
Pros:
• Good sound and size
• Alexa mike can be turned off and is responsive even over loud sound output
• Can be used to stream music from streaming service or from mobile device
• Good template for unit placement and hole placement for support.
• Clear channel support to boost the vocal center sound
• Decent effects
• Subwoofer links itself
Cons:
• One HDMI in
• Connectors are cramped and could affect the types of cables being used.
• No display to assist in setup and monitoring
• No wall screws or mount and pretty low-end keyholes for support on wall
You should consider this unit for your sound needs on your TV as it performs quite well.

The Yamaha YAS-209 is packaged efficiently with the soundbar and wireless subwoofer contained in one box. In the box you have 2 power cords, one optical cable, the 50 W x 2 channels soundbar (36-5/8" × 2-1/2" × 4-1/4"), wireless 100W subwoofer (7-1/2" × 16-1/2" × 16"), remote control, mounting template, quick start guide and safety brochure. Note: no HDMI cable is included. You may need to purchase this separately if needed. Alexa is available as well.
Connections:
HDMI: 1 in and 1 out
Digital optical: 1 in
Setup #1: Bedroom
To make the setup as efficient as possible, you will want to download the Sound Bar Controller app by Yamaha Corporation. The TV is connected via HDMI supporting Audio Return Channel (ARC). ARC allows your TV remote to control the volume on your soundbar. Use the app to connect to your home Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz) network. The subwoofer connected to the soundbar right away. The app is very well designed and you can use it to complete all of your adjustments to match your listening needs. You can also use the remote which is the option I used. I turned on a TV show and made some adjustments. The subwoofer is not large at 6 inches but has decent bass. Using the Bass Extension option further emphasizes the bass. The Clear Voice setting emphasizes dialogue and works well. The 3D Surround option worked well in a bedroom size area. Alexa is available and this was set up effortlessly and connected to my Amazon account. With Alexa you have many commands and services available to you. With this option we could listen to local radio and many of the other things Alexa provides for you. Connecting my phone via Bluetooth (Version 4.2) was effortless. Playing music from the phone on the Music soundbar setting sounded really good. The soundbar supports WAV, FLAC, ALAC, WMA and MPEG-4 AAC.
Setup#2: Large entertainment room in a basement.
Moving the soundbar to the basement where it will be used the most. This is connected to a TV using the optical cable. Plug in the cable and power and it was ready to go. The unit worked perfectly. I did notice the 3D surround setting had a more hollow sound in the large room. I will not use this setting in this room.
Conclusion:
My experience with other Yamaha devices has shown me you can always expect great quality. The YAS-209 soundbar is no exception. Setup was effortless. Playing different audio sources was simple. The App is great. Does this sound as good as a $1000 soundbar – No. However, this would be a top choice among soundbars in this price range. It is a definite value buy considering its performance and features.

Having recently picked up a new 65” flat screen, I’ve spent some time enjoying the latest streaming features and the great images. The TV I bought has decent sound, but I know built-in speakers will never be as good as a sound bar and subwoofer...and the streaming has me hooked on live concert shows and films crafted by quality-of-experience obsessed filmmakers.
The Yamaha 2.1 system comes with a sizable, attractive sub and a nice bar with a few buttons and status indicators, as well as an optical cable (but no HDMI?!). Most of the setup was easy, but I never was able to use the app because my home WiFi is 5Ghz only and the app setup requires 2.4Ghz.
That said, I was up and running with the system that mattered in less than 10 minutes. The reproduction quality is nice...good enough to remind you how musical instruments actually sound.
The Bluetooth connectivity with your phone, tablet or similar device is easy and convenient.
Yamaha, of course, add some nice integrated processing. The Clear Voice feature does what it advertises - produces cleared voices than an average system. It also supports DTS Virtual:X. It’s a surround sound feature that works fairly well to enhance your listening experience with compatible shows and movies.
Finally, the YAS-209 is Alexa-Enabled. I was surprised and a little confused at how this could be useful. Essentially they’ve provided some basic level of voice control to the sound bar. That’s nice because I don’t really dig the remote’s looks, nor the need for another one in my life. I do like telling it to raise the volume or change sources though. I think a lot of friends and significant others will. I’ve never been to a house and not heard someone complain about not being able to use the sound bar.
Nice package, good sound, good features for a reasonable price!

This is the second sound system I have had. I like this one much better. The last one had no Subwoofer. That makes a huge difference. And to have one like this that is wireless is absolutely fantastic. This 6.5“ sub fills in the low end sound and nice bass when called for.
Set up was a breeze. Connected HDMI to ARC HDMI connection on the TV, plug in both the sound bar and the sub into wall outlet and you are ready to experience some nice sound.
The unit comes with a mounting template to properly position 2 screws in wall to hang on the wall, which is how I mounted. (See pics)
Next, Download the Yamaha Sound Bar Control app onto your phone. This will help you to set up features like Alexa and WIFI. After set-up you can also use your app to adjust your volume and sound setting (same setting that are available on the included remote) Settings include the following;
-Sound Program (Movie, TV, Music, Sports, Game and Stereo)
-Clear Voice
-Bass Extension
-Subwoofer volume
Top of sound bar contains the following:
Indicator lights; Status, HDMI, TV, Bluetooth, Net, Surround, Clear Voice, WiFi, Alexa
Buttons; Alexa, Mute (Microphone), Input, Volume, Power
Back of soundbar:
Power connection, HDMI IN, HDMI out, Network jack, TV input jack (optical) for TV’s without ARC (Audio Return Channel) connection, and micro USB to update firmware if needed.
Sound:
Very happy with the sound. Watching a football game in sports mode and I kept hearing the crowd off to the sides. Pretty nice surround for a soundbar. 3D surround feature provides an even fuller sound.
Very nice having Alexa as well. Nice to have another Alexa speaker in the house. Since this is in our basement, we now have voice control for music etc. on that level as well.
Overall very happy with this Yamaha Soundbar.
A:Not sure if this relates to your situation or not. I also have my soundbar connected via the HDMI ARC port and noticed sound stopped playing from TV sometimes, usually after asking Alexa to play music or playing music from my phone through a Bluetooth connection. In my case when this happens I can get sound back again by pushing the TV button at the top of the remote. I noticed that the white LED light on top of the soundbar was on NET and needed to be put back in “TV” input mode again.
A:So long as your TV has an optical output you’ll be able to use the soundbar system by plugging it into the optical port on the TV with the included optical cable. HDMI (ARC) allows you to turn the unit and the TV on/off using only your TV remote. Without that connection you’ll need to turn the soundbar on/off using a separate remote that comes with the soundbar.
BTW, the soundbar and included wireless subwoofer sound great in our master bedroom. We no longer have rear speakers as we used to but for a bedroom audio system and for the price, this is a nice system.
A:Correct: no internet cable (CAT-5 cable) comes with unit, although the unit DOES have an ethernet (CAT-5) jack.
If your house is wired for ethernet and you want to connect to the WIRED ethernet, then you have to buy an appropriate length of CAT-5 cable, then use the new cable to attach the soundbar's ethernet jack to the nearest ethernet jack in your house (i.e. ethernet wall jack).
If your house is NOT wired for ethernet (or if you prefer to connect wirelessly even if you house IS wired for ethernet), the soundbar is able to connect to a home wireless network. However you have to use the "sound bar controller app" in order to do so. The app is the only way you can do things like (a) select your wireless network to connect to, (b) enter the network security key/password... You cannot do that stuff via the (very basic) remote that comes with the unit.
I'm not a big smart-phone guy, but I did download the Yamaha Sound Bar Controller App to connect the soundbar to my wireless home network. The download/install process on my Samsung phone was free and surprisingly easy. Once you get the app installed then you can do all the network-selection/enter-network-password stuff required to connect the soundbar to your wireless home network.
So the bottom line is you have to install the Yamaha Sound Bar Controller App on either your smart phone or a tablet device in order to configure the soundbar to be able to connect to a wireless network.
