A mantle or shelf is only needed if you want to put a sound bar under the TV. If it’s just the TV then you don’t need a mantle.

Your wall requires enough space to accommodate your TV dimensions and will require a wall mount to hold the TV. The Geek Squad can conduct a home assessment to determine your needs. If you don't have a service contract, I highly recommend you get one. They have been very helpful in setting up a new laptop, WIFI (Orbi) and TV (Sony) for me this past year.
