Both are correct. If you have both AirPods in and take one out the music stops but you can then hit play and the music will resume on the remaining AirPod.

You can listen to music with only one ear piece in while the other one is in the case charging, you will have full functionality with one air pod as you would with two. If you have both in your eye when you start up a song and then take one out it’s gonna pause until you either put it back in your eye or hit play on your device. Another feature I’d like to point out is that you can have one headphone in your eye and a friend can have one in their eye and the music or video will connect to both of them

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you only have one it, they'll keep playing. I regularly use just one at a time.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You can leave one in the dock/charger and use the other one. When you take the one being used out of your ear the music will stop. I generally use only one at a time and the other stays in the dock/charger
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you have both in and take one out, it will pause the music. If you unpause or started with just one, then it will play in one ear in mono. I use these with one ear doing chores to listen to podcasts or talking on the phone. They are perfect for this.
