You need a separate modem and that is a good point since the cable companies lobbied congress long and hard with $$$$ to have control over the "Firmware" (Programming - operating system) of a modem, which would include a combination unit that is a modem and router with or without wireless capability. Effectively, they release updates when they want if they want whilst holding the modem ransom to your account. Thus, if there is a critical or important update that would be part of the Router or wifi function of a combo device the manufacturer has to pressure the cable company to push the released firmware to the appropriate customer's devices on their network. It is for this very reason that I would always recommend separate units for my IT clients. Best Buy has an excellent Motorola Modem with the Boradcom chipset in it on sale, avoid the [INTEL PUMA 6 or 7 CHOPSET} just google that and do a little reading, the issues have garnered a class action lawsuit against Arris, and the cable modem manufacturers with the INTEL PUMA chipset in it. Finally to this device, The ASUS RT-AC3100 ROUTER, this is about as state of the art as possible right now! (With separates, as in modem & router, you have full control of the setup and firmware updates of this device too!) Just set up an amazing AI MESH system with their new firmware and it works well for a client and I personally own this and an ASUS RT-AC68P as well. These are the only router brands that I recommend for most applications of home / small office, fast, secure, effective select-able features and many uses for networking everything connected! Just get this one and a good modem, you will be happy for years to come! Seriously! There are a list of modems to avoid with the intel chips in them at: http://badmodems.com/
I would recommend:
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This is just a router. You’ll need a modem which is separate.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It's docsis3 3.1, and yes you would need a desperate router to have wifi, but if you only run wired connection then no you can just use this.
