A:AnswerI've had this issue with every Asus router I've ever had. It's currently happening to me on my 3100. There only thing i can get anyone to tell me is that it's faulty hardware and the band is burning out. I can understand that once but over all my owned asus routers it's happened to all of them at some point in their life. First time it happened it was off warranty so I was out of luck, lately it's been shorter so I just take it back and exchange it. My problem is I paid an extra 200 for this router thinking their high end wouldn't have this issue but no it happened one of the fastest out of them all.
A:AnswerYou need a separate modem and that is a good point since the cable companies lobbied congress long and hard with $$$$ to have control over the "Firmware" (Programming - operating system) of a modem, which would include a combination unit that is a modem and router with or without wireless capability. Effectively, they release updates when they want if they want whilst holding the modem ransom to your account. Thus, if there is a critical or important update that would be part of the Router or wifi function of a combo device the manufacturer has to pressure the cable company to push the released firmware to the appropriate customer's devices on their network. It is for this very reason that I would always recommend separate units for my IT clients.
Best Buy has an excellent Motorola Modem with the Boradcom chipset in it on sale, avoid the [INTEL PUMA 6 or 7 CHOPSET} just google that and do a little reading, the issues have garnered a class action lawsuit against Arris, and the cable modem manufacturers with the INTEL PUMA chipset in it.
Finally to this device, The ASUS RT-AC3100 ROUTER, this is about as state of the art as possible right now! (With separates, as in modem & router, you have full control of the setup and firmware updates of this device too!) Just set up an amazing AI MESH system with their new firmware and it works well for a client and I personally own this and an ASUS RT-AC68P as well. These are the only router brands that I recommend for most applications of home / small office, fast, secure, effective select-able features and many uses for networking everything connected! Just get this one and a good modem, you will be happy for years to come! Seriously!
There are a list of modems to avoid with the intel chips in them at: http://badmodems.com/
A:AnswerThe default password for the router login is Username "admin" and Password "password". Your wifi router key can be found by logging into your router (Typically http://192.168.1.1) through the web browser and clicking on Wireless on the left side. Your key is listed under the WPA Pre-Shared Key. If you cannot get into any of it there is a reset button on the back of the router. By holding it for about 10 seconds it will reset to factory defaults and then you can reconfigure the router from scratch. I would result to that as a last resort though.
A:AnswerThere are 2 types of firmware... the (Stock)Asus and there is a 3rd party FW called Merlin, you might need to do a clean hard reset and load up the a new configuration and try a config not from a backup ... also if you are in a high WiFi traffic or interference from microwaves or cordless phones consider what’s around your router. There is also guide for understanding the 2.4GHz and Bluetooth... there are soo many variables but encourage you to review your logs and take to SNB forum there you’ll find a lot of helpful people address your issues, calling Asus support leaves me more frustrated but it is also an option too.
A:AnswerThis router does come with a mobile smart app that will allow full control of the router over the internet. For the two days that I had one, I had setup the app on my iPhone as I commute to school and wanted to be able to access my home cloud drive over the internet and having that kind of control was a plus in case I ran into any speed issues. This router is equipped with game boost that can add more bandwidth to certain connections which you can control from the app. It was a plus for my buying decision. Too bad the router didn't last longer than two days.
A:AnswerIt depends on your cable modem. This router requires a modem with atleast a gigabit port to prevent a speed mismatch between the two. I had to return an older modem to buy one with a 1000 port. A 10/100 port on a modem will not work well. Not sure how well it works with their big modem/wifi combo but it should work fine as long as that device is in bridge mode.
A:AnswerOS means "operating system." Usually, you will see Mac OS, not just OS. All of our products are Apple and the router supports them all perfectly. Hope this helps.
A:AnswerI have spectrum and use this network. I did have to call Spectrum and request that the modem/router be placed in bridge mode. I initially plugged this system into the modem/router from spectrum and it worked horribly but when the Spectrum device went to bridge mode, the system was awesome.
A:AnswerYou're confusing routers and modems. The modem connects to the outside internet line, whether that's dial-up, cable, fiber, or DSL. Most equipment you rent from your ISP is a modem/router combo unit. The AC3100 is a router only and can't function as a modem.
A:AnswerThe range depends on the physical layout of your house, but it should reach 200 feet, and several users rate the range as 'very good'. It's for very large homes, and as a dual band router, is compatible with Hughes Net.
