I was in the same situation. I downloaded the August app. and just followed their instructions. I did however have to contact the previous homeowners to have them delete their account associated with that lock or it won't let you program.

If the previous owner didn't release the lock from their account, it's impossible to reprogram and there is nothing customer service can do to reset it. Try downloading the app, take the batteries out of the lock for a minute, and see if you can program it following the in app instructions. Good luck. It would be a rotten move to leave a useless deadbolt for the new owner.
