I don' know the model hl2140 but I would look at the specs of each, or click the compare buttons if you can. by work on a Toshiba you mean w/a Toshiba laptop? don't see why it wouldn't. I have a Lenovo. it comes w/a cd to upload driver. you can also download it from the web per the instructions. I used the cd and no problems with the program, printing from my laptop. sorry i'm not much of a computer geek. I got this model because it had good reviews across several sellers and it was a great price on sale. basic printer nothing fancy: that's all that I needed. hope this helps.
