The Brother XR9550 comes with a foot controller.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It comes with the foot pedal and it is optional whether you use it or not. Now follow the DVD and you can see how to use it without the pedal. There is a button similar to the reverse button to hit and a slow speed, medium, and faster speed level so you can use your hands to guide the material through. Depending on what your are doing it will not run with the pedal plugged in. So, if you have difficulty check that pedal plug in and remove it. That was not very clear on that button. If the pedal is plugged in and you try to use the button it may not start. But nothing is wrong. Double check your instructions.

The foot pedall is separate from the power cord. On some machines they are combined, on the brother xr9550, they are not. However, it also has a speed control switch on the front that allows you to set your top speed. When doing slow careful work, like following the edge of an applique, I put it on the slowest setting, so no matter how hard I press the pedal, the slowest is as fast as it will go. Doing long straight strips or filling bobbins, I put it on the fastest setting, pedal to the floor, and it whizzes. I do not reccomend going fast with the more complex decorative stitches, as they have a tendency to not look as nice and even.
