The 656 has a fax dialer built in where the 654 does not. Also the 655 has a scanning duplex and the 654 has a single scanner feeder. In other words the 656 will automatically scan both sides of a page placed in the top mounted scanner feeder but the 654 will only scan one side of the page, you will need to flip over the page and feed ir in on its other side.
