All toner cartridges must be present. But you can set the color cartridges to 0% in the Printer display menu in order to get only Black cartridge to use toner. Also note that even when the cartridges show empty you will still likely be able to print. This is because the printer counts pages rather than measuring actual toner left in a cartridge. So print until your color no longer shows up in the page....then replace the toner cartridge.
