The burner controls are at the front of the stovetop. When off, as you note, you can't see anything, except for a small on off switch at the front far left. That switch is not raised, it's like a button on your phone, which responds to the heat of your finger. Once that is activated, four red lines appear across the front, and each has an on off switch for burners which have a pan on them. You touch the on off switch, and select the level of heat along the red lines.
