Hi FACETS- The cardboard cover on the right top or side wall of the microwave interior is there by design. The cardboard (mica) covers the waveguide system that feeds microwave energy into the cavity and should not be removed. The microwave should not be used for any function if this cardboard cover is not in place. If removed, it would require service to replace. This part is not sold separately. Also, it is not possible to determine the product failure rate, lifespan , life expectancy, or life cycle of an appliance, even an approximate age. There are many variables involved, like: frequency of use, type of use, location of appliance (ex. high humidity; near the ocean; etc.), care, and maintenance. Thanks for choosing GE! SUE@GEA
