A:AnswerOur family friend and I both bought ours in 2018. They bought theirs in November and we bought ours in December. Theirs quit working in August and ours quit in September.
We cleaned it regularly. It was the first generation but still, one would think it should work longer than 3 years for the money.
A:AnswerThe ice bin is more secure on 2.0 — with double pane plastic front and plastic grab ledge for open. There isn’t a on/off button in the front of 2.0. The intake hose on the back is in a better location on 2.0. 2.0 is dark grey, rather than black. The fan vents are a slightly different configuration. 2.0 doesn’t use the bulky filter that cost $30 each. Unit 2.0 has been quieter than 1.0. Use a mixture of distilled water with tap water to avoid calcium deposits along seams of the unit.
I’d like to get some special techo-thank-you from BestBuy for my insightful answers.
A:AnswerHello. We appreciate you choosing our Opal ice maker, though we regret that you’re having an issue with the unit leaking. We know this must be frustrating, especially as it's new - we’d like to help. We do expect that some condensation may form, resulting in water dripping under the ice bin. This water might sometimes collect and drip down the lower front surface of the ice maker. If this is where the leak is, installing the drip tray to collect the water might help. If you believe the leak you’re seeing isn’t normal, we do have Opal Support available at 1-866-907-6718; those specialists can certainly assist further. We hope this is solved for you soon, and we're always available if you have any other concerns or questions. All the best. -Sarah@GEA
A:AnswerHi there - Thanks for reaching out to us about what kind of water to use for your Opal icemaker. The manual for this unit states that you should use drinking water that has less than 12 grains of hardness per gallon. Using water that is not within these standards will void your warranty so please ensure you are using the correct water. We know you're going to love this icemaker and we're sure it will serve your needs for a long time to come. Reach out to us again should you have additional questions. Kind regards. -Kacie@GEA
A:AnswerHello. Thanks for checking with us! This unit must be installed upright on a flat, level surface that is able to support the total weight when full of water. Ensure a minimum of 3 inches clearance around the side and back walls of the ice maker for proper air circulation. The area has to be well ventilated, and the unit must not be near any heat sources- such as ovens or cooktops. We hope this information helps, and should you have any additional questions, please reach out to us!- Kianna@GEA

A:AnswerThe wifi is to operate when not near the unit — if you’re on a vacation, at work, don’t want it to make ice at night. I haven’t had success with with new model GE model 2 wifi — but I set up a schedule with Opal 1 model.

A:AnswerHello- We appreciate you taking the time to ask us your question. Yes, this unit is meant to be on so that it can produce ice for you throughout the day. Your first batch of ice will be ready in 20 min or less! Also its innovative design avoids clumping and leaks by recirculating melted ice to the water reservoir so that you'll always have fresh ice on hand. We hope this helps! If you need anything else, please let us know. Sincerely- Dianna@GEA
A:AnswerPlease follow the cleaning guidelines found in the "Care and Cleaning" section on pages 6-9 of the Owner's Manual. If this doesn't prove helpful, we recommend contacting Opal Support at 1-866-907-6718, M-F 8-8 EST.
A:AnswerI had two of these and both stopped making ice after 8-9 months. The first one I took back and git anew one, the second time I figured out it has two bin sensors behind ice bucket in Shute where the ice comes out. These two sensors get calcium build up so the ice maker thinks the bin is full. Clean them with water and toothbrush and your ice maker will work like new.
A:AnswerEnsure a minimum of three inches clearance around the side and back walls of the ice maker for proper air circulation. This can be placed under that cabinet as long as you have at least 3 inches of space. It should not be built in though. Don't place it near any heat source, like an oven or cooktop.
A:AnswerThe refrigerant used in this Opal Icemaker is R600a and it is a gas. Regarding the leak, during normal operation, condensation forms on the bottom surface of the ice bin. This water will sometimes collect and drip down the lower front surfaces of the ice maker. The included drip tray can be installed in front of the Opal to collect this water. -- We recommend following the cleaning and system descaling procedures starting on page 7 of your Owner’s Manual to improve this issue. The Owner’s Manual can be viewed on the XPIO23BCBT product page on our GE Appliances website. If those tips don’t help, we recommend contacting our Opal Support Team by calling 866-907-6718, or by submitting the Opal support request form on our GE Appliances website.
A:AnswerHello - We have a compressed refrigerant in our Opal Ice Makers. The refrigerant is R600. Thanks for checking with us. All the best! -Don@GEAppliances
