Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You can use either the standard 564 or 564xl cartridge for any of the ink bays in your printer, as long as it is the correct color. You just have to make sure that the symbols on the lever in the printer match the symbol on the cartridge. Do not put the photo-black (bow-tie symbol) in the regular black slot (black circle symbol), they are not the same type of black ink.

I swapped the empty cartridge after that printer stopped working due to "fault" error due to an empty yellow cartridge. I've been running an XL normal black cartridge in that printer for over a year. If you get "fault" errors re the ink cartridges, you might try sequentially removing and reinstalling all 5 of them... I had to do that to get my machine to clear that fault error and to recognize the new genuine HP 564XL yellow cartridge.
