• A:Answer The Photo Black ink cartridge is used by a printer that has both ink cartridges even when you are not printing photos...so it runs out of ink regularly even if you don't print photos and only print text. You must replace the photo black ink in order for your printer to print text properly. Just one more ink cartridge to purchase. If you mainly print text only, you may want to reconsider and not buy a printer having both the photo black AND regular black ink cartridges.

• A:Answer All HP 564 series cartridges are compatible with the HP Photosmart Plus printer. You install both a black and a photo black cartridge at the same time. These go into different slots on your printer. You have both standard quantity and high quantity options for both your black and your photo black cartridges. High quantity cartridges are labeled HP 564 XL. The HP 564XL Photo Black is a high-capacity photo black cartridge.

• A:Answer HP Photo Black ink cartridges use black and gray inks to produce more accurate shades of black when printing photos or pictures. Depending on which HP printer you are using, the printer will either use the black ink cartridge only or it will use the photo black ink cartridge along with the standard black ink cartridge.

• A:Answer If your printer uses 564 cartridges, you have the option to use standard or XL cartridges. If you're using more ink printing text (assuming black only) I would use 564XL Black and regular size for rest. However if using color print then maybe consider XL across the spectrum. Base it on consumption use.

Q: QuestionIs this compatible with the B209 printer?I purchased this assuming the XL would be the same as the standard 564 Black but it doesn't fit my printer. Looking on the website neither the standard 564 or 564XL lists the B209 and you don't have the B209 as a drop-down option for your Ink Finder tool so I have no have to verify this. Please advise. Will take cartridge to BB store and have them test it out if it is compatible.

• A:Answer The HP Photosmart Plus All-in-One Printer series (B209) does not use the HP 564XL Photo Black Ink Cartridge (CB317WN). This printer requires the standard HP 564XL Black Photosmart Ink Cartridge (CB321WN). I apologize for any confusion. The HP 564XL Photo Black Ink Cartrige is only used by the HP Photosmart Premium All-In-One Printer series.

• A:Answer Before you remove your 564 cartridge from one printer and insert into another printer, you should open up specs on your printer to see whether you have enabled cartridge protection. If so, that cartridge will not be allowed to work in another printer. If you disable cartridge protection, all future new cartridges may be removed and installed into a compatible printer. A reminder that Black 564 and Black 564XL are a wider cartridge (with a pentagon symbol) used mainly for document printing and will fit only in it's designated slot . Photo Black 564 & 564XL are narrower cartridges (with a bowtie symbol) normally used to print photos on Photo printers which may require the use of 5 cartridges.

• A:Answer Absolutely YES! I just did so tonight when the standard sized yellow cartridge ran out in my HP Photosmart 7520 printer. I swapped the empty cartridge after that printer stopped working due to "fault" error due to an empty yellow cartridge. I've been running an XL normal black cartridge in that printer for over a year. If you get "fault" errors re the ink cartridges, you might try sequentially removing and reinstalling all 5 of them... I had to do that to get my machine to clear that fault error and to recognize the new genuine HP 564XL yellow cartridge.

• A:Answer You need the 564 (or 564XL) Photo Black cartridge. It is the same width as the Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. The wider black cartridge is for regular printing as most of your printing is in black and white. The photo cartridge has an image of a camera on it (see photo) and the symbol is two opposing triangles.

• A:Answer I would think that the setup cartridges are comparable but probably don't have a lot of ink in them. I do find that the XL cartridges last a bit longer but I don't always order the XL size. I usually try to look for sale prices on the cartridges, normal size as well as XL size and order the ones on sale. Hope this helps.

• A:Answer I'd be willing to bet the issue is that you have the photo and need the black, or visa versa and are putting it in the wrong spot. This printer uses both a black and a photo printer, they're not the same size, so maybe you thought you needed black and got phone instead, or visa versa.

Q: Question564XL Black CartridgesI recently bought a pack of 564XL ink (3 cartridges instead of the usual 4), the pack did not contain the photo black cartridge. At the same time I bought a 564XL black pack (3 cartridges instead of the usual 2). The new black cartridges are about 1/2 the size of the ones in the 2 pack, i.e. 25% less ink total, but what worries me is the new black cartridge is too wide to fit in where the photo black cartridge is housed. Do I have to find a store where I can buy proper photo black cartridges, or do I just run my printer without that cartridge.

• A:Answer There are two "blacks". 564 Black or 564XL Black fit in the document black slot (Pentagon symbol). 564 Photo or 564XL Photo fit in the Photo Black slot (Bowtie symbol). You can not mix and match where the ink goes.

• A:Answer They use a silly symbol to decipher the difference on mine (and it is so annoying)...the photo black is a bowtie shape and the plain black ink is a pentagon shape. Hope that helps.
