In fact, after you do the initial setup, you can just remove the color cartridge if you know you're never going to use it, and the printer will go into "single cartridge mode" and happily print with just the black. It can do that (or just print in black if the color runs out) because the printheads are actually in the cartridge. Dragging them across the paper "dry" quicklly wears them out, but if you're going to get rid of that cartgridge anyway, it doesn't matter how badly trashed the printhead on the cartridge is. Printers where the head is actually in the printer itself generally won't let you do that, because replacing the printhead is going to cost as much as a new printer.
