QuestionDo you have to have all of the different toners in the printer at one time for it to operate? For example if the yellow cartridge runs out, do I have to replace with a full one before anything will print?

Question“Does the M283fdw come with STANDARD size Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow toner cartridges? How can one tell what exactly they’re getting, as it doesn’t specify “introductory” cartridges on the “what’s in the box.” This is a big factor in my decision.

- Answer According to the HP spec sheet, the cartridges are introductory ones. The black is rated at 800 pages, while the colors are rated at 700 pages each.

QuestionCan you rearrange scanned pages from the touchscreen and/or from any apps on another device. For example, since this doesn't duplex scan, can I scan all front pages first, then all back pages, then rearrange to be in the right order?

- Answer Yes you can. Here's how it works. First you need to install the Full featured HP software. You will launch HP scan. In this example let's scan a 5 page double-sided document (10 sides) . You load them in the document feeder and note in the software that you are copying 2 sided manual to a PDF. You can the 5 pages. You take the output pages and rotate them so that the side facing in to the printer is now facing out. Load them in the document feeder and continue. The software automatically reorders the pages to 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10. You can then save the PDF and compress it if you wish to make it smaller.

QuestionWhat is the cost of toner cartridges etc.?

- Answer The high yield black is about $95 and the high yield color is about $100. Based on the page ratings, it's about 3 cents per page black and 4 cents per page for each color. I guess that means that a full color page runs about 15 cents.

- Answer There is a manual feed tray. The front of the printer with the HP logo comes forward and is a convenient way to feed speciality stock or envelopes.

- Answer Mine came with starter cartridges, not full ones. You can use either HP 206A or 206X. For the money, I'm likely to stay with the X's just so I'm not annoyed by having to purchase them so often. The price per page difference isn't significant to me since I don't print very much. I don't know how much you print, but since I print things very infrequently the LaserJet instead of the OfficeJet was the way to go. It has no print heads to dry out or other wastes of ink/toner that cost extra money to replace them before they're used up. My print quality has been great thus far.

QuestionIs there a limit to the number of computers that can connect to this wirelessly? My wife and I each has a MacBook Pro. Can we both be connected and send documents to print? And when scanning, will we be able to choose which computer to send to?

- Answer You should not have an issue as we currently have 5 computers connected to ours. However I'm not certain if there is an actual limit.

- Answer Yes. It takes a standard phone jack (cable included), standard ethernet (not included), and USB (Included). We set up our printer for wireless printing. It didn't seem to like having both the ethernet and wi-fi hooked up together. We have received blue screens of death on both of our windows 10 laptops (a Dell XPS 7th Gen I7 and a Brand new 2020 HP Spectre X360 10th Gen I7) immediately after installing the software for this printer. We continue to receive them randomly since then. If you get this figured out please let me know.

- Answer You can Scan to: USB drive, computer, HP network folder, E-mail, or selected address book. From an inserted USB drive you can print documents or photos. The printer also has apps that let you scan and upload documents to Dropbox or Google Drive and print “Quick Forms” like graph, music, notebook paper, and fax cover sheets, among others. The print quality is excellent.

- Answer Yes, but it must be done manually. After one side is scanned, you have to put the document back into the document feeder to scan the other side.

QuestionI would like confirm that we don't need an Ethernet chord to be plugged into the network that we have the option to connect it through WIFI? In other words, the only chord plugged to the printer could be the power chord and everything else is wireless?

- Answer If you tell the application you're printing from to print in black and white, it will only use black toner. However, the printer has to have all four toner cartridges installed (and they have to have some toner in them) for it to print.

QuestionThis would be for our church. We also need to print approximately 50 bulletins a week. Is this a good machine for that? Also, we do lots of copies as well. Do you have to feed in material to be copied one page at a time?

- Answer Hello. Thanks for your question. This HP LaserJet Pro m283fdw printer can support up to 43 pound paper when printing. There is an auto document feeder for copying or scanning on top that can hold up to 50 pages.

- Answer This printer cannot auto select different paper sizes. There is only one paper tray and a single sheet paper slot on this printer.

- Answer According to HP 60 lb photo paper is the heaviest for this printer. That does not mean that it cant, it means HP did not build it for heavier paper.
