This was on the GE website. Personally, I waited longer. I waited about a day. It may have been unnecessary. "After transporting: If it has been necessary to transport the refrigerator on its side (ex. Top Freezer and SxS models), it should stand upright for an equal amount of time as it was on its side before plugging it in. If it was on its side for more than a day, leave standing for 24 hours before running. If laying on its side just briefly to service, clean or adjust, just a few minutes of stand time will be enough."
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If it's been turned on it's side for any length of time the oil at the bottom of the compressor will have drained into the refrigerant lines so the reason for letting it sit upright for a while before turning it back on is to let the oil have time to run back into the compressor. I'm a retired air conditioning, refrigeration, heating and appliance repair technician.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. In my experience, it's always been recommended to have refrigerated appliances always standing up, but... When we picked the box up at the store it would only fit in my car laying down. When I got home I installed it and left it unplugged for a few hours before turning it on. It has worked fine. The box does not indicate that it needs to be upright at all time either.
