One USB 3 powered port is sufficient. USB 2 *may* require a port with supplemental power, or two USB 2 ports depending on the USB ports in your computer.

Then I tried it with just one, and it has worked to PLAY both DVD and Blu-Ray. Haven't tried to write anything yet, so I don't know if it will need extra power to record.
