No. The magic jack does need to be connected to the internet if you are using a plug in phone. If you are using the magic jack app on your smart phone then the adaptor doesn’t need to be plugged into the internet.

Mine doesn’t work unless it’s plugged into the computer.

It comes with a power supply, so you don't have to leave your computer on.

You do not require to have your computer on to have this working properly. I have mine running 24/7 via the adapter that connects to the electrical outlet. This was done after the setup was complete. Additionally I have an Ethernet cable connected to it from my wireless router to this (magic jack) so it can receive Intenet.

You will need your computer only to set up your magicjack. After that you can unplug it from your computer. For power you connect it to your USB wall charger. For data connect it directly to your router\modem using an RJ-45 ethernet cable or wifi if your magicjack has that feature. No computer needed after initial setup. Computer can be turned off.

This device can be used with or without a computer after the initial setup. Just plug it into your modem or router. You don't need to leave the computer running just the internet modem / router
