  • QuestionI have never had a camera of this type and wanting to purchase one i can use to shoot wildlife photos...deer, birds, etc. Would this be a good choice for a beginner with no experience. Im not wanting to spend a ton of money either.

    Asked by labmom.

    • Answer The Nikon D3400 DSLR camera has a variety of options to help the user get amazing images effortlessly and is designed with beginner DSLR photographers in mind. One helpful option on this camera is Guide Mode. This mode helps you choose from the most frequently-used and useful functions to get a great image with automated help from the camera. It also provides you with more advanced choices so, once you are more familiar with the settings, you can try out different features. Another is to place it in Auto Mode (green camera icon). This mode will allow the camera to automatically analyze the subject and select the appropriate shooting mode when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway down. The available scenes that this mode chooses from are Portrait, Landscape, Close up, Night Portrait, Auto, and Auto (flash off). Along with these two modes are many others that can be utilized once you are more familiar with the camera. This camera comes with two zoom lenses so you can get sharp and vibrant images of wildlife from afar. To learn more about what this camera can do, please contact Nikon Support.

  • QuestionShould I get the zoom lens or a prime lens? Which is better ??

    Asked by John.

    • Answer This Nikon D3400 DSLR camera comes with two zoom AF-P type lenses. The AF-P DX 18-55mm G VR lens and the AF-P DX 70-300mm G ED lens each offer beautiful clarity and sharp precision, even in low-light situations. The 18-55mm is ideal for wide-angle shots, portraits and fast action while the 70-300 super-telephoto zoom lens is perfect for sports, wildlife and landmarks. Either of these two lenses can be used to provide brilliant images. A prime lens is also a great idea to add to any growing camera case. A great starter prime lens to add to this D3400 two-lens kit would be the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Standard lens. The 35mm provides portraits with softly blurred backgrounds and excellent low-light performance.

  • QuestionHow is the audio quality for the movie mode and can an external mic be added?

    Asked by pjmCT.

    • Answer The Nikon D3400 DSLR camera has a built-in monaural microphone that can be turned on or off. It also has two different options to adjust sensitivity level of the microphone; Auto and Manual. The camera does not have a Mic jack for plugging in an external microphone, however, it does have amazing audio recording quality that is further enhanced when using a near-silent, AF-P type lens. Nikon's "P" series of NIKKOR lenses use a pulse motor (utilizing stepping motors) to focus smoother and quieter than previous drive systems. This quiet drive system makes the lenses ideal for use when shooting video.

  • QuestionChoosing between d5500 or d3400 list reason for purchasing either one. Need your expert advise

    Asked by Utah555.

    • Answer Both the D5500 and the D3400 have amazing features to offer for photographers but they are quite different from one another. A major difference to note is that the Nikon D5500 has a vari-angle touch screen and eye sensor; the Nikon D3400 does not. Another important difference is that the D5500 has 39 Autofocus points while the Nikon D3400 has 11 Autofocus points. One thing the D3400 has, that the D5500 does not, is a Guide Mode that teaches you how to take a great image and lets you know what options are best for each subject. Both cameras offer up a wide variety of scenes, special effects and in-camera editing tools. Whichever one you decide upon you are sure to enjoy having the power to capture moments with it. • QuestionMy Hubby just bought me the Nikon Coolpix P900, as my first real camera, for same price as this! I use my P900 to shoot the day and night skies & beyond. I love it! How does the Nikon D3400 DSLR compare with the Coolpix P900 for Astrophotography (Only)?

    Asked by LolleyGirl76.

    • Answer Where the D3400 excels is in it's ability to be as versatile a camera as you need it to me. Since it's lenses are interchangeable, you can purchase additional lenses as your abilities and creative pursuits change. If you are only talking about astrophotography - the capabilities of a the COOLPIX P900 with it's amazing zoom are very difficult to beat. With the D3400, since the camera does have a larger sensor, it will be better at capturing photos, with less noise, in lower light situations.

  • QuestionAt what rate of speed can each camera take pictures consecutively. How frames per sec. I have several nikor lense from my older SLR. At those lenses compatablewith the newer style DSLR's?

    Asked by rfranco.

    • Answer So I had a d3200 and the lens that came with that one fit on my new d3400. I have also seen online that you can buy adapters to fit other brand lenses on these SLRs so that might be another option. If you really want to be 100% sure I would take one of your lenses into the store and ask one of the digital SLRs associates if you can try it on the body of the camera that you plan on buying. As far as the rate the camera takes pictures it not only depends on the camera it also depends on the lens and the memory card. If you use the stock camera lens that comes with it (18mm-55mm) and shoot in manual mode you can shoot up to 1/4000 of a second for a single picture if you want to shoot consecutively you might get 4-5 pictures per second, which is fast. Now for the memory cards, there are a ton of memory cards out there but if you want to take quick pictures you want to get a 32gb with a speed of at least 80mb/s. The way thay they basically work is just like transferring files to a PC, if you're trying to transfer a huge file it will take longer and the more transfer speed you have the faster it will work. That's how the memory card will work, if you get a regular cheap memory card its most likely going to be mb/s which is slow for an SLR. If you get something a little better you will notice the difference right away. The write speed will help you get faster pictures saved into the card.

  • QuestionWhat do the size of the pictures do and matter. Is their a default setting that should be used. And what about the jpeg setting any the raw. I don't know what that means thanks

    Asked by Steve.

    • Answer The image area comes in 3 sizes: (L)  6,000 x 4,000, (M)  4,496 x 3,000, and (S)  2,992 x 2,000. The bigger the image area you choose the more pixels used and thus better image produced. I believe (M) is the default option and pictures look fine on that. If you plan to print pictures on a bigger canvas, however, a lower pixel count might create pixelated images. JPEG and RAW are how the camera saves your pictures. RAW files require a special program on your computer to read the image, but the end result is a clearer picture more reminiscent of the actual object photographed. A JPEG is a "compressed" file of your picture on your memory card. More compressed = less quality in the end.

  • QuestionDoes this camera have an Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB) option? For HDR photography? If not, can you recommend a price-comparable alternative that does?

    Asked by PhotogNewbieNY.

    • Answer The Nikon D3400 DSLR camera doesn't have Exposure Bracketing or HDR options but these two features can be found in the Nikon D5600 DSLR camera. The D5600, which has comparable megapixels, ISO sensitivity and full resolution continuous shooting to the D3400, and quite a bit more, is a great alternative option to the D3400.

  • QuestionDoes 3400 body auto focus the telephoto lens? Very important question in order for me to purchase

    Asked by Kofaali.

    • Answer The Nikon D3400 DSLR camera does not have a built-in focus motor. For lenses that autofocus on the D3400 look for lenses with AF-S, AF-P and E stamp on the barrel. Nikon AI and AF-type lenses can also be used but must be focused manually. The lenses listed with this D3400 DSLR kit are both AF-P type lenses and will autofocus with this camera.
