To turn off the flash when the Nikon D3400 is in Auto Mode, press the "i" button on the back of the camera and select "Flash". Change the option to "No Flash" and then press the "OK" button. You will then be able to take images without flash on the camera. Guide Mode also has an option in "Easy Operation" for "No Flash".
