Yes, the UB820 will play 4K HDR MKVs from an external hard drive (It has to be plugged into the rear USB input) but it will not play any of the lossless audio tracks. These include DolbyTrue HD, DTSMA-HD and Dolby Atmos. It will play lossy audio tracks (Dolby Digital 5.1/7.1 or DTS 5.1/7.1). The UB820 will also not recognize chapter marks in any MKV files. Despite these "shortcomings", as a pure disc player, the 820 now stands at the top of the mountain. I have a still brilliant Oppo-203 and from a pure video standpoint, the 820 now edges it out.

Please try again later.If you chose the FLAC profile in MakeMKV you will get lossless audio with your 4k UHD HDR files in a MKV container from the USB, and via home network streaming. This works on my UB820 using a flash drive or hard drive plugged into the rear USB port, and network streaming using JRiver Media Center with no trans-coding. Perfect bit-for-bit 4k UHD HDR picture and lossless sound, being the Dolby TRUE HD or DTS Master Audio in the FLAC files . However, the player only sends 5.1 channels PCM to my processor even when there are 7.1 channels in the mkv file like probably 98% of all UHDs contain. I don't know if the 820 folds the rear channels into the sides or ignores them altogether, but anyway it is much better than regular lossy Dolby Digital or DTS audio.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.It will play them, but it will not give you advanced audio like Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. That does not mean that it will not be added in a firmware update. But, right now, no complex audio. I think that currently it will only get to 5.1.
