You can hook up to the old waterline and that isn't true that it needs to be stainless, mine are copper and it works great. The serviceman didn't want to do their job that they were sent to do and you were told that they would do.

As for installing it yourself, it depends on how handy you are with plumbing. I couldnt do it, but when I purchased my frig, I was told I needed that part. Good luck.
