• The minimum height of the microwave is actually based on the distance between the cooktop and the cabinet above it, rather than the height of the grates which can vary. The SMH1816 is designed to be mounted under a cabinet that is 30" or more from the cooktop, so the bottom of the microwave should be at least 13-1/2" from the cooking surface. - Ms. Samsung

• 18" is minimum. If you have a gas stove you should never leave an open burner (without a pot or pan on it) regardless of the distance.
