Unlocked means......If you buy your phone for example from Verizon, or sprint, their phone will come locked and they will charge you to have them unlock them even if you a already a customer. They need to do this in order to set up your phone. If you buy your phone from lets say Best Buy they will come already unlocked. Then all you have to do is bring your phone to a provider like Verizon or Sprint, (and you are a customer already) they will set that phone up with no charge

Unlocked phone may be used as a mini-tablet without cellular function, i.e., WiFi only tablet. You can access internet using WiFi. You can download music from a computer and listen to music. You can take pictures. But, you can not make phone calls and GPS function does not work. However, you can subscribe to cellular network provider anytime. Unlocked phone that uses GSM technology may be used in Europe. You bring it to Europe and there, buy a SIM card of an European cellular network provider at airport or convenient stores. Unlocked phone may also be used with prepaid phone service without a contract. Verizon may require a 2 year contract. Total Wireless prepaid service sells a 30 day service. You May stop service after 30 days without penalty.
