Hello Buster, We are happy to assist you with your inquiry about the Shark® Bagless Cordless Hand Vac. To empty the dust cup, press the dust cup release button and pull out the dust cup. Remove the dust cup filter and empty the debris from the dust cup. Rinse the dust cup filter in water and let it dry completely before replacing it back into the dust cup. Do not wash it in a washing machine or use a hair-dryer or other forced air to dry it. air-dry only. We hope this information helps. The Customer Support Team
