• No, the port is stand alone, arc, one, amp, etc, communicate with your WiFi network, forming a Sonos mesh network all controlled either individually or together as you decide. I found the port very useful addition to my Sonos system. It works great. I have It controlling a non Sonos amplifier and speakers. Plan on adding a turntable or CD player through it soon.

• No the port is not needed. I use it to connect to A turntable to my Sonos system.
