This question is more complicated than one might expect. The Sony website spec states: 100W into 2 channels driving two 6ohm speakers. Since most (not all) speakers are 8 ohm-speakers, the power output of the AN1000 driving 8 ohm speakers would be more like 85W/channel into 2 channels. The complication comes when people assume the statement on the box: 165W x7 means 165W/per ch (7 ch). This would have to be more like 165W spread out over 7 channels. Basically, 165W shared across all active channels. Keep in mind: Surrounds and height channels do not need quite as much power as your fronts and are often smaller speakers. Also: The lion's share of power-demand comes from bass which for most people will be a powered sub-woofer with its own 100W amplifier built into it. Now that's out of the way, sound quality should not be measured in watts. There is so much more to sound quality than how many watts the amp is rated at. If you have a large room and plan to host parties with loud music, then you might need more power. If you are watching movies in a normal size living room all 7 ch. driven, I feel comfortable saying you will be quite happy with this receiver. I purchased the AN1000 a couple of days ago to replace my aging (legendary) Sony DN1080 which I have loved the past 10+ years. The AN1000 is an improvement in many ways, but the number of watts per channel are rated exactly the same: 100W X 2 into 6ohms.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Sony's website reads: STR-AN1000 7.2 Channel 8K A/V Receiver power specs 165 Watts measurements at (165 W 6 ohms, 1kHz, 1ch, THD 0.9%) · (total harmonic distortion less than 1%) But in the above, Sony tips the scale in their favor by running 1 channel into 6 ohms and only at 1 frequency of 1KHz. This is pretty common from manufacturers so they can publish impressive numbers. What you need to know is this receiver is no slouch in powerful output. Today I was watching Kong vs Godzilla ATMOS 5.1.2 through the AN1000. I had the volume set at a modest 30. I have to say, it was plenty loud and clear and the bass was impressive.
