A clay litter type. I've noticed normal Lightweight 4-1 Protection clumping litter still does't clump quick enough and has more dust than preferred (I have attached a picture from the very first use. The top right you'll notice a smear.) They recommend using their premium litter and I do not disagree; it is more expensive but this device uses SO MUCH LESS litter than scooping normally that the price is worth it to keep a cleaner box!
