It’ll take a reading, but the benchmark standards for what means high BP is based on the person sitting up. It’s not about the device, it’s about the way the human body acts when laying down vs sitting upright.

Formerly, people felt that taking BP while lying down would result in lower numbers, but now that has changed to being slightly higher. The American Heart Association recommends that it be taken while sitting.
